Casting call for "Jason, Jason, and Florence" - an original one act play to be performed at hotbox theater in Concord June 16–25th
The show is about bad relationships, self-hatred, love, abuse, grief, guilt, acceptance, forgiveness, and fish sticks. But mostly it's about how the person who often does the most damage to us is ourselves.
Actors who are interested would need to be available the week leading up to the performances to work in Concord, as well as for a public reading in Portsmouth NH on Saturday, May 13th in the afternoon/evening. Rehearsals will be split between Portsmouth and Concord, depending on where the actors are coming from that day. Actors with experience in straight Theater, original works, and workshop productions are preferred
If interested, email a photo of yourself, a brief summary of your work, and the times you are available over the next couple weeks to read with our existing cast. We will email you a script to look over, and request that you look at one character or another specifically. Auditions will be by appointment only
Characters include:
Jason: male, 40s – 60s. At least some Gray hair preferred. An estranged father who swears he's changed; desperately trying to get back into the life of his transgender daughter. Some experience with stage combat preferred, as this character is involved in a scene of domestic violence. This is a lead role
Ashley: female, late 30s (flexible). In a May-September relationship with Jason. The role is one of the most challenging in the entire play, because while she is only on stage for a single scene, within that scene goes through the full range of human emotion. The actress must make us believe that there is truly something worthwhile about the man we literally just saw hit her and leave her. Fight training preferred as she is involved in a scene of domestic violence. Must be comfortable with kissing a significantly younger male actor (The actor is 19). This is a supporting role
Molly: female, late 30s-40's. The sister of Ashley, seen fighting over custody of Ashley's son after her death. 1.5 scenes
Cate: female, late teens. A girlfriend to Jason and Ashley's child. Tries getting her boyfriend to open up, fails, gets angry, and they break up. 1 scene
(Note: this character will not be required for the May 13 reading, and we will not consider anybody under the age of 16, with a strong preference for 18-19)
Andrew: male, 20s. A boyfriend to Jason and Ashley's child. They run off to hook up at a party, and instead he ends up wondering if his partner is really "all there". Must be comfortable in an intimate scene with a female actress on a darkly lit stage, no nudity required. 1 scene
to those who are concerned with the content of the show: I won't lie, it's very dark and very gritty. We show damaged people doing horrible things and causing damage to others, but I want to emphasize that we are are working through the show with the utmost respect for our actors, and we hope to present the more repugnant parts of this play with as much integrity and as tastefully as we possibly can. If you haven't yet run screaming for the exits, we hope to hear from you soon!
All the best,
Alex Pease
