Arts In Reach (AIR) inspires teenage girls and gender-expansive youth to be brave, elevate their voices, and create the lives they imagine. Girls and gender-expansive youth ages 11-22 engage in community arts programs with professional artists. Together, mentors and teens co-create intentional spaces to take safe risks and express themselves through the arts. We believe all teens should have oppor

tunities to thrive and become self-reliant adults. Our programs are open-enrollment, free of charge, and include transportation assistance. They draw on various arts for teens to grow and lead.

It is with overwhelming emotion and deep admiration that we announce the departure of our legendary program manager, Haley Searcy.

We are so grateful for Haley’s dedication to AIR and our teens over the last four years. They have brought invaluable contributions to the organization – from epic systems to enhanced community visibility, forging new and strengthened connections with area artists and collaborators, and providing crucial insights for advancing intersectional justice within the organizations. And let’s not forget the laughs – Haley’s dry-wit humor is unmatched!

We have gleaned countless lessons from Haley. They exemplify work-life balance and demonstrate what it means to maintain a vibrant artistic practice alongside their work with AIR. Personally (Cara here), Haley has been instrumental in shaping me into a better leader through their example of active listening, calm demeanor, reflective thinking, and profound empathy. We are confident that Haley’s leadership qualities have had a positive impact on our teens as well.

Haley has accepted a position as Student Aid Associate at NH Charitable Foundation. We couldn’t be more thrilled for their next adventure. We eagerly anticipate seeing them flourish in their new role and seize opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Haley- thank you! You will always be our #1 Cow-peep.

Haley’s last day is next Tuesday, April 9. Feel free to share your gratitude and well wishes in the comments below. Also, be sure to follow their art account () to stay updated on their latest creations and upcoming art markets.

For Black History Month, AIR wants to celebrate black women and gender nonconforming artists who have made an impact on the art world with their contributions!

Haley, AIR’s Program Manager, wants to highlight the incredible work of Chawne Kimber. Haley first learned about Kimber and her work at their undergrad Appalachian State University. She was taking an Art For Social Change class, and the class attended Kimber’s artist talk at the university. It was the first time Haley has ever seen someone use quilting as a form of activism. She found Kimber’s work to be mind-blowing in how such large quilts have so many tiny pieces that compose the final, powerful statement of each piece. Definitely check out more of Chawne Kimber’s work!

Cara, AIR’s Program Director, would like to highlight Betye Saar, whose work explores themes of race, gender, and mysticism. Cara holds a deep admiration for Saar’s assemblage sculptures, which were crafted primarily from found objects, ephemera, and mixed media. Saar’s work is very process-oriented and integrative, blending symbols, myth, text, elements of spiritualism, and autobiography. For Saar, the construction of these sculptures was almost ritualistic—a reappropriation aimed at challenging racial and gender discrimination while redefining the representation of Black women in art and culture.

In Saar’s own words, “The idea of the work, the accumulation of materials, the act of putting them together, and the sharing of the work are all part of a ritual. This process of objectification is... purification. Once in the world, the artwork can become part of someone else’s ritual.”

For Saar, creating art is an act of reclamation, and the artwork itself serves as a source of empowerment and conduit for others to interpret and understand their own experience.”

We’re starting a new Community Spotlight Series to shine a light on local and regional organizations doing incredible work! Our first spotlight is on the Indigo Arts Alliance in Portland, ME.

About Indigo Arts Alliance: “Indigo Arts Alliance embodies a multiracial approach to the rich intersections of citizenship, community-building, and creativity. Our work is in service to shifting historical injustices as a vital component of achieving equity for Black and Brown artists. We believe that artists are instrumental to doing the work of social justice in ways that are deeply grounded in lived experience and community. At the heart of Indigo Arts Alliance’s mission are our Artist in Residency programs, which provide Black and Brown artists an environment for the production of artwork in all media across various disciplines.”

If this resonates with you, check out their work and give them a follow!

This past week, AIR’s Program Director Cara had the honor of co-teaching Teen Mental Health First Aid at Somersworth High School, alongside School Board Chair, Maggie Larson.

Teen Mental Health First Aid (tMHFA) is an evidence-based mental health literacy program teaching teens in grades 10-12 to recognize, understand, and support their friends and peers facing mental health and substance use challenges.

We’re so proud to contribute to the well-being and empowerment of teens in our community. Shout out to Community Partners for funding this critical training for Strafford County youth!
