Lighting Series.

This collaborative effort has been achieved through a New York based designer and Portland based glass maker. The Harry Allen Esque lighting series was brought to life when Harry Allen and ESQUE STUDIO decided to trial a highly experimental development process and we think they have hit the spot.
The process started by creating flat steel forms which were water-jet cut, the next phase was up to the glass blowers to hand blow fluid glass shapes into the cutouts within the steel.
The end result creates a soft warm glow against the hard cold steel, the lights were presented during New York Design Week 2016 at Heller Gallery

What a fun way to kick off a new year of shoots! This is glass artist Andi Kovel, whom you might recognize from Netflix's 'Blown Away'. I had the opportunity to photograph her for Broken Top Whiskey at ESQUE STUDIO last month. Watching glass-blowing up close by such an expert was purely inspirational.

PHIL ! | just seeing the final images from this project. We made a set of custom beer boot pint glasses for Amstel Loght as a surprise birthday gift for Phil Mickelson! Andi had photos of his famous calves and made a grid to get dimensions to scale up to life size. The process is really a reversal of mural making techniques. Then she hand sculpted his calves in clay to cast as a blow mold. Not to promote excessive drinking or anything, but a super fun project, thanks Amstel!!!❤️.

SHOUT | out. throwback to our most controversial editorial piece. Holiday Gift Guide included our Diamond Thickie, 30 lbs of complex detailed processes. from such an insane honor to be selected here many moons ago. This piece is hand faceted by Justin and takes weeks to achieve this surface on such a heavy piece. It’s our most labor intensive design and a true labor of love and material mastery.

People don’t realize how much it costs to run a glass studio and how hard we work to perfect each detail of each piece. Plus we share the list price with gallery’s, designers, reps, the tax man etc.

Anyway felt like it’s worth featuring here to challenge notions of art, craft, design and value. Start a conversation about perceived value vs actual investment. Touchy subject but let’s talk and educate and add value.

What we highlight is the attributes of glass that can only be captured by hand by dedicated artists that are one of a kind original artworks intended as modern heirlooms. With so much love

MOVING | bitter sweet as I move into the next chapter of my life (aka mid-life cleanse) and move from my beloved home and into a new one. It a gorgeous house but a lot smaller then my current house, SO I’m selling off a few cherished possessions with the goal of clutter free living! I have these posted on under my account for but thought I’d offer them up here as well so my friends can grab ‘em first. DM for serious inquires only please. Happy to discount for direct sale.

Neutra Boomerang Chaise: by House Industries from the 70’s. It’s no. 81 in a limited edition of 100 and a super special piece. A few minor scratches on the maple arms, consistent with lightly used furniture. The rest is pristine and original condition. Asking $4200 online and $3600 here.

Chromecraft Dining Set: also from the 70’s with an oval smoked glass tulip table and 4 tulip swivel chairs in lucite. One of the chairs has a crack and they’re slightly chipped from hitting the glass table. But the table and 3 chairs are in gently used condition consistent with preowned furniture. Asking $3800/set online and $3200 here!

CUSTOM | had the pleasure of visiting this original design and install of our Silvered Drop Pendent. The cord is covered in jute and swagged from the jbox to the center of the table super stylishly.
It seems that a lot of people would say they don’t prefer a swagged cord, but we love it as additional visual appeal and it’s a great answer to having use use large canopies or moving electrical junctions. Just our $.02

Our Story

ESQUE STUDIO Experimenting with form and technique is paramount to Esque’s core ambition. Esque was founded by artists Justin Parker and Andi Kovel. Extraordinary attention to detail and quality supports an innovative vision for functional accessories, lighting and architectural elements that are driven by a fascination with the inherent attributes of glass. Each unique creation is both a fine piece of art and a sought-after collectible.

Esque studio was built using cutting-edge technology to reduce waste and gas consumption. Two wind-powered furnaces run up to ten times more efficiently than traditional gas furnaces and produce zero CO2 emissions. Justin and Andi started as glass blowers for hire and found that time ‘linked us together as far as our passion for, and interest in, pushing the medium goes. We are each other’s perfect foil.’ The duo have risen to international acclaim over the past fifteen years (they were recently honored by Time Magazine as one of the ‘Design 100’, today’s one hundred most influential international designers) and now lead the American market for hand-blown, modern, functional glass work. Justin, most famous for his skill in creating enormous pieces of glass, studied under Italian masters with a focus on handmade glass sculpture. He is an accomplished artist, exhibiting at venues including the Brooklyn Museum of Art,and he has also produced fine art pieces for artists including Jim Dine, Kiki Smith and Tony Oursler. Andi is internationally celebrated as an influential accessory designer, glass blower and fine artist. She has exhibited with Claus Oldenburg, Damien Hirst and Kiki Smith, and has designed glass lines for Ralph Lauren, Anthropologie and Donna Karan, but she is most recognized for her new forms and techniques in the field of glass. Hand producing a collection of gorgeous vessels and edgy decorative accessories, inspiring art and beauty. JUSTIN PARKER Justin Parker of York, Maine moved to San Francisco to study painting and sculpture at the San Francisco Art Institute. He then transferred to San Francisco State to dedicate his time to glass blowing. Over the next few years he traveled the world to learn from master glass blowers in Venice, the Czech Republic, and Japan, as well as at every glass school in North America. After graduating he was offered jobs to teach glass and sculpture at Parsons School of Design and N.Y.U., and so moved to New York. Over the next few years he began working with artists from New York and around the world to help them create pieces and sculptures out of glass. Sometimes it would be prototyping designs for mass production, other times, creating one of a kind sculptures for artists such as Tony Oursler, Kiki Smith, Maya Lin and Jim Dine. During this time Parker, still in his mid twenties, began showing his work with well- known art dealer Ramis Barquett. He was also participating in group shows around Manhattan and Brooklyn. The last of these group shows was at the Brooklyn Museum of Art. Esque Design began in 1999 when he met and began working with artist Andi Kovel. With Justin's technical knowledge of traditional techniques, and the ability to blow huge pieces of glass, combined with Andi's sense for style and artistic influence, the two make incredible work together. ANDI KOVEL Andi Kovel is celebrated internationally as an influential accessory designer and glass blower in addition to her career as a fine artist. She has exhibited with Claus Oldenburg, Damien Hirst and Kiki Smith; has designed glass lines for Ralph Lauren, Anthropologie and Donna Karen; was recognized by Time magazine as one of 100 most influential international designers, and is most recognized for her new forms, techniques and concepts in the field of glass. Andi's background in sculpture, painting, accessory design, and art theory uniquely equip her to become one of the most original and influential glass artists working today. Her work has been shown in galleries internationally, and she has taught at New York University, Parsons, Urban Glass, and the University of California, San Diego. In 2001, Kovel moved from her native New York to Portland, Oregon, to establish her studio, Esque, with her partner, Justin Parker. Their fresh techniques and successful experiments have won them wide acclaim as tastemakers of modern design.
