Russ Cox is bringing his signature gestures and saturated colors to Casco Bay Artisans with a new collection of works. Cox’s oil paintings evoke the sensory feeling associated with place, nature and experience. Works evolve from a process of applying layer upon layer with multiple glazes to create movement, translucency and depth. These works are deeply meditative, becoming more complex as they unfold.⁠

The Red Paintings of Erika Maning⁠
"Making the work is about letting go, improvising, getting out of the way, and letting the painting be what it wants to be…which generally is not what I as the artist thought it might be. I always start with big expansive line gestures of Prussian Blue paint, and the Surrealist technique of “liquid down a vertical plane”. This helps to give me some loose structure to start with. The viewer can sometimes see these initial gestures peeking through the layers of paint in the finished work. I feel this adds to the collective history of the painting, and have always been drawn to the idea that artwork is comparable to human experience in that the story and what is underneath isn’t always visible on the surface."⁠

“My art moves fluidly between large site-specific outdoor sculptures, small intimate assemblages room-sized installations, and large, immersive wall reliefs. I work in sculpture and other media to explore visual and physical boundaries that diverse materials can present.⁠
The common themes in every case are pattern, structure and the perception of space as it relates to the timeline of life. My artwork records that space or moment in time while incorporating the movement of energy residing there both human and elemental. Water currents and water lines, patterns of flocking birds called murmurations, and geological formations collect and disperse on my worked surfaces. The structure and patterns of domesticity, family, and history build as stacked forms in metal or hundreds of rocks cast in pulp as an homage to honor women.⁠
My work is inspired by the natural world, time, and a desire to interconnect the spiritual, physical and intellectual.”⁠
