Our Story

In early 2012, producer Eric Scheur was a fan of live storytelling. He had attended many storytelling shows in Portland, but when he got the idea to seek out one that focused solely on the subject of s*x, he was surprised he couldn’t find one in town. So, he rented a theatre, reached out to friends, friends of friends, and even posted ads on craigslist to find folks who would be interested in sharing their most intimate s*x stories on stage.

On April 26, 2012, the Mystery Box Show launched at the 89-seat Brody Theatre in downtown Portland. The first show was a surprise sold-out success, and the audience asked “When’s the next one?!” Just like that, The Mystery Box Show became a regular series, appearing with 5 new storytellers every month.

One year later, Eric met Reba Sparrow. Reba had a background in theatre and forensics, and she saw great potential for the show— potential that Reba knew she had the right skills to nurture: organization, structure, audience care, and most importantly, emotions!

When Reba began coaching the show’s storytellers, she was able to dig into their tales much deeper than Eric had done on his own. The change in the stories on stage was noticeable, and the audience related to the stories more than they ever had before.
