We get A LOT of questions about our choice of Yakima and, we’ve always said, it was the data that brought us here! We figured we’d lay it all out! Please excuse the long post, but we could go on and on…
1) The full size WaveGarden tech requires a 5.5 acre pool so to keep build costs somewhere near planet earth, we knew it had to be outdoors! Well, only one place in the state has the nickname “The Palm Springs of Washington”, a perfect descriptor for the 300+ days of sunshine and the high desert climate provided by Mt. Rainier’s rain shadow. With temps that peak triple digits during midsummer, surfing in a swimsuit and rashguard is within driving distance for millions of people. Yakima also sits 1,000-2,000 ft lower in elevation than other Central WA locations with similar proximities to markets. That means it gets warmer earlier and stays warmer longer than places like Cle Elum, Wenatchee, or Bend, maximizing or minimum operating season (April 1 - Oct 31). Shhhh…but there might be a way to heat the pool, TBD…
2) If you could drop a pin anywhere in the NW to have access to all major markets in the region, you couldn’t pick a better spot than Yakima! Two hours to Seattle, three to Portland and Spokane. That puts the 15th, 25th, and 98th largest MSAs in the country, or about 7 million people, within a day trip. A day trip? We live in a market where skiers and snowboarders have regularly proven their willingness to travel 2-3 hrs, in adverse conditions, for a day on the hill so we don’t think it’s too much to ask to do the same in sunny and 80 degree conditions. We also think both Vancouver, BC and Boise are in play for our secondary markets - it’s not outrageous for a ski family from Seattle to take a trip to Whistler or Sun Valley.
3) Yakima is ALREADY Central WA’s tourism leader! Say what?!?! That’s right, Yakima sees about a half a million MORE tourists than Lake Chelan every year. Why do they come? Mt. Rainier National Park, heading to the world-famous Gorge amphitheater from anywhere south of Olympia, or to enjoy the center of the US craft brewing world. But the real driver? Athletic families. Yakima hosts 500+ sports tournaments per year!
