Ten Florida Moments — and this one closes the series.

This is Siesta Key, a beach with a completely different personality than the coast I usually paint. The sand out here is finer, whiter, almost cool underfoot even at midday. The water leans turquoise instead of the deeper blue-green I know from home. And these lifeguard towers — yellow, red, green, blue — stand like little sentries the whole length of the beach, each one its own small landmark.

I picked the red one. It felt right against all that towering cloud.

Ten paintings, ten moments, ten small windows into what this state looks like when you actually stop and look at it. Thank you for following along with this one — it’s been a joy to paint.

Painting nine of ten. 🌅

This one takes us to Ponce Inlet, in that stretch of time before sunrise — still dark along the shore, but the sky out over the ocean already glowing orange and gold. I remember standing behind the dunes with my camera years ago, and this little red buoy light kept catching my eye, peeking through the sea oats swaying in the breeze. Something so quiet and expectant about that moment, right before the sky really opens up.

This little painting holds a big story.

In August 2025 I photographed the rebuilt wooden walkway at Ponce Inlet — not knowing it would be gone within weeks. Hurricane Milton destroyed the original in October 2024. Volusia County rebuilt it just in time for Memorial Day. Then Hurricane Imelda closed it again, and a fierce fall nor’easter washed what remained out to sea.

This is that brief window of time — caught in oil on canvas.

As painters do, I interpreted the scene rather than documenting it — the walkway here is my impression of that moment, not an architectural record. But the feeling of it? That I hope is exactly right.

Between Storms — Ponce Inlet Jetty Walk is number eight in my Ten Florida Moments series. The warm wood of the railing, the jewel-toned teal water, that dramatic Florida sky — and the Ponce Inlet lifeguard tower standing watch through it all. 🌊

No. 3 of 10. ⛈️

That particular Florida afternoon when the clouds go dramatic and dark and you can smell the rain coming from across the water.

The sky turns cobalt. The shoreline catches the last of the light. Everything goes still for a moment.

This is that moment. 8x6 inches of oil on canvas.

Not quite summer yet. ⛅
The beach is quiet, the clouds are enormous, and a small group of friends stand at the water’s edge not quite ready to leave.
I love painting Florida in that in-between season when the sky is more interesting than the weather.

Some days at the beach are just perfect. ☀️🌊
The lifeguard on duty, kids in the surf, the red ATV rolling by — this is a Florida summer beach day in full swing.
I love painting these busy joyful scenes. There’s so much life in them.

Everyone’s searching for something at the beach. 🌊
Shells, sea glass, the perfect wave — or maybe just a few quiet minutes with their feet in the Florida surf.
This loose watercolor is one of my favorites. I love the way the figures reflect in the wet sand.

Ponce Inlet Lighthouse Sunset
That lighthouse has been guiding ships into Ponce Inlet since 1887. 🌅
This is the view looking northeast from Smyrna Dunes Park at sunset — the sky turning peach and lavender, birds drifting overhead, and the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse glowing on the horizon.
Some views never get old.
