Chompers the groundhog loves bananas.❤️

Buster the baby goat was hanging out in the woods with the chickens on this beautiful Spring day. It’s the perfect weather for scratching and pecking (and nibbling on leaves if you are a goat!).The chickens love free ranging, but they are never out without a human “chicken-sitter” watching over them to protect them from the numerous predators (hawks, eagles, foxes, coyotes) that we have here. We are always looking for more volunteer chicken-sitters so the birds can have more time to enjoy their beautiful fields and forest- just send an email to [email protected] if you are interested in hanging out with some really cool animals!🙂❤️🐓

Welcome to our newest resident- a two month old baby lamb we have named Aurora! She was born a tiny runt on a farm that raises animals for meat. When her mother rejected her and the farmer did not want to bottle feed a baby, a kind woman stepped in and raised her in her house. When Aurora became too large to live indoors, she reached out to find a home for her. Our awesome animal caretaker @raquelmaugust responded and brought the tiny sheep to Poplar. She loves people and is so adorable. We love her already, and soon she will be able to run and play with lots of rescued sheepie friends.❤️🐑Thanks to Maureen McGowan for the cute photo!

Our elderly rooster Miguel has a new wheelchair!! A huge thanks to @minnow.and.blossom for loaning this awesome chair to Miguel, who has been recently unable to stand and walk on his own due to arthritis. Now he can happily hang out with his new friends Maya (who he doesn’t mind sharing with!) and Willow the Turkey. Thank you, Abbie, for improving Miguel’s life so much with this great wheelchair!💕🦽🐓

Breakfast time for Evangeline and her babies💕

03/12/2022

Grayson and his cow friends have a nice big barn to go into, but even on a crazy windy and snowy day like today they sometimes prefer to hang out under the cedar trees instead. The extra fuzzy coats they grow every Winter keep them nice and warm, even on this very cold day! ❤️❄️🐄

03/01/2022

A sure sign that Spring is coming- the friendly groundhogs are emerging from their holes after their Winter hibernation. Chompers (so named because of the way she lunges at our treats) was the first to emerge from under the goat barn this weekend. We are so happy to see nicer weather AND our wild friends again!🌱🌻☀️

02/28/2022

Mama goats make the best playground for baby goats! Evangeline is the most patient mom. 💕🐐

02/25/2022

Dexter and Bella getting called in to their barn for dinner.❤️ Hard to imagine that Dexter ( the Thoroughbred taking the lead) just appeared in our pasture one morning 10 years ago- he was a terrified yearling who had a broken back and a punctured eye with lots of sores and missing hair all over his body. We have never solved the mystery of where he came from, but he healed beautifully and has lived happily at the sanctuary ever since. 💕

02/23/2022

Elliot likes to play with his food!😂

Evangeline’s babies (who we named Gidget and Charlie) are 6 days old today. They are doing great and are starting to get very active and bouncy! The tiny triplet Buster is still in the house being bottle fed, but he is also very healthy and growing. Hopefully he can be out with his siblings soon. Yesterday was a warm sunny day and the happy family enjoyed being out in the sun and fresh air. The babies are already starting to nibble on solid food!❤️🐐

Today was about 30 degrees colder than yesterday, and the baby goats needed to wear their tiny goat coats. Little Buster is staying in the house for now and getting bottle fed, but he is getting stronger every day. Evangeline is being the best goat mom ever.💕

02/17/2022

We have babies!!! Evangeline, the sweet goat rescued from a hoarding case in PA gave birth yesterday to triplets!! The little ones are doing well- the tiniest black one (who we named Buster) was only half the size of his brother and sister, and was very weak when he was born. After being tube fed throughout the night, he is much stronger and can now stand on his own. Mama is doing really well and is taking great care of her babies. They are such a sweet family and it’s so nice knowing they will all be able to live together happily for the rest of their lives.❤️

02/14/2022

We just received a round bale delivery for the cows, but before we could take it to them, the goats decided it was lunch time. Even little Frankie joined in.💕🐐

Mandy’s first snow day! She really enjoyed running and playing and rooting in it!🐖❄️☃️💕

02/11/2022

Our sweet little piglet, who we named Mandy, was found abandoned in MD, and was terrified of people and of being touched when she first arrived. We don’t know what her former life was like, but judging from the way she acted-humans had not been nice to her. (She is the type of pig typically raised for meat.) After less than a week, she is already becoming so trusting and friendly, and now really enjoys being loved and petted and getting belly rubs. Thanks to her awesome caretaker Evan, who has been patiently spending his early mornings and lunch breaks gently working with her, Mandy is now finally learning to trust and love, and we are so happy that she will never know anything but kindness for the rest of her life. We wish all pigs could live this way. 💕🐖

This adorable little piglet was found running loose in Silver Spring. She was definitely not someone’s pet, she was so afraid of people. She is a Yorkshire pig who will grow to be 800 lbs. in a few years- we are guessing someone purchased her to eat her, and she somehow got free. Thankfully Montgomery County Animal control was able to corner and capture her, and brought her to Poplar Spring on Saturday. She is very thin and was terrified of being touched when she arrived, but she is already learning so quickly to trust us, and rolled over for her first belly rub yesterday! She was shivering in the cold morning temperatures, so had to wear a sweater, which made her much more comfortable. We are so happy that she was rescued, and after she has gained some weight and is healthy, she will be able to live a wonderful life with lots of piggy friends. We love her so much already! ❤️🐖

It was a very exciting weekend! On Saturday we welcomed Evangeline, a very sweet goat who was rescued from a terrible neglect/hoarding case by @lancasterfarmsanctuary . This wonderful sanctuary worked very hard with other rescue groups to save over 300 animals from a farm in Central PA where they found many farm animals that were dead, starving or infested with lice, mites and internal parasites. The farm was covered in trash and infested with rodents. Thankfully they were able to remove all of the animals and find them great homes. When it was discovered that Evangeline, one of the survivors from this horrible farm, was pregnant, we happily agreed to welcome her to Poplar Spring. Lancaster Farm sanctuary’s vet had performed an ultrasound and determined that Evangeline has twins (and maybe triplets!) and she is due to give birth in the next couple of weeks. She is still very thin and anemic but is very bright and seems so happy to have a safe and comfortable place to relax and eat all of the nourishing hay and feed she is receiving. We have a Baby Monitor in her stall so we can keep an eye on her to make sure everything is ok. Evangeline is such a friendly and trusting goat, we are so glad we can give her a wonderful life here, where she and her babies will be able to live together happily for the rest of their lives.🐐💕

Temperatures were in the 20’s, but our special needs goat group Dudley, Sally, Yeti and Evie (with honorary member Randall the Turkey) found a warm sunny area by the barn where they could soak up the sun.🙂🐐🦃❤️

01/08/2022

The goats finally ventured out into the snow today -including baby Frankie, who had to wear his cute tiny sweater because he was cold. He was not very excited about the snow, and just cried a lot, then went back into the barn under his nice warm heat lamp.😂

Our second day of snow in one week! The animals were not particularly thrilled with all this cold white stuff, but they were making the best of it. Most of them stayed warm and cozy in their barns but a few brave ones ventured out. Here are a few snowy scenes from the last few days. ❄️☃️🙂

Happy New Year from all of us at Poplar Spring!! We are so grateful to everyone who donated and volunteered to help all the rescued animals! Here are a few highlights from 2021. We hope you all have a happy and Healthy 2022- thanks so much for all of your support!!💕🐓🦃🐄🐐🐑🐖

All the animals really enjoyed their special treats that they received today for Christmas. The goats and sheep loved the popcorn, the pigs were very excited about their pumpkins and apples, the cows and horses received apples and carrots, and the chickens and turkeys got extra corn and sunflower seeds. It was a wonderful, unusually warm Winter day - thanks to all the awesome volunteers and staff who came to help out. A good time was had by all!🙂🎄❤️

Dudley is finally home after two weeks in the hospital!! He is now back at the sanctuary where he will stay in a stall for a few more days resting and healing from his bladder stone surgery. Soon he will be back to his old antics, frolicking and getting into trouble, haha! A big thanks to the awesome vets and staff at New Bolton center for saving his life and getting him healthy enough to be home for Christmas!🎄🐐❤️🎁

Julianna seems to be completely recovered from her spay surgery a couple of weeks ago. She really wanted to play with the alpacas, but Griffin and Spencer were definitely not interested. 😂 We are slowly introducing her to the big pig group this week, so hopefully she will find more enthusiastic playmates there!

My friend Bob created a song and video about animals. I thought people here might appreciate it. By the way, Bob will be running at the 5K next month!

ANOTHER place to donate to in honor for BETTY WHITE tomorrow ❤️🐾💙🐾💜🐾
How is your day? ☺️ I hope you're doing alright! What makes or helps you feel better? For me it’s volunteering or donating if I don’t have time to volunteer. #BettyWhiteChallenge felt the same way! Donating just $10 a month to a favorite charity for animals can feed a furry friend for a week or more and only skips less than a meal for a human animal. Have you researched any ways to donate to honor them and Betty Whites life long legacy? Here’s one of mine. Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary You can volunteer here and donate! BONUS! They also have a great in person Thanksgiving day celebration when permittable. ~Orion #Nature #MentalHealth #RescueAnimals #AnimalSanctuary

Congratulations to Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary for another successful Run for the Animals (the 18th one)! Cheers to those who joined this year's Fish Feel team. We had the most members of any team, and raised $3,115 ~ more than any team except Poplar's Peeps! Thanks to team members Beth Edelstein, Howard Edelstein, Jim Fremont, Mary Finelli, Michael Gurwitz, Hal Katzman, Amie LaPorte, Diane Block Levant, Marc Levant and Maria Schmit, and special thanks to Preston Huey and an anonymous donor for their very generous donations for the 250+ rescued animals at Poplar!
Hiiiiii 👋 We have so many new friends since officially opening our DC shop, so here’s a throwback pic and a Brewing Good introduction. This is us, Karla and Justin, Brewing Good’s mom and dad. Before we birthed our biz bb in 2015, I (Karla) worked in animal rescue with my org Animal Rescue Corps. For five years, we traveled across North America, addressing large-scale cruelty cases where communities didn’t have the necessary resources. They are still going strong, shutting down puppy mills, removing animals from hoarding situations, and bringing relief to crowded rural shelters. Justin was a photographer and a college art professor, who made a series documenting storm chasers and published a book with his BFF and collaborator that focused on exchanges between individuals and communities, as well as interventions in the landscape in Pontiac and Detroit, Michigan, and Toledo, Ohio. We both wanted to spend more time at home with our dogs and we wanted to make a career of supporting our communities and causes we care about. Justin had been roasting as a hobby for almost a decade, so coffee made sense. For the last six years, it has mostly just been us roasting your coffee orders and subscriptions, serving you at events (like Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary’s 2019 Thanksgiving event, where this photo was taken), and building cherished relationships with you, your kids, and your dogs at our roastery’s coffee bar in Savage, MD. Your support gave us the push and confidence to grow this past year to a team of five with expanded hours in Savage and a second coffee bar location in DC’s Dupont Circle neighborhood, where we have been so warmly welcomed. (Thank you!!) You’ll see us at both locations, in DC with Nick and in Savage with Mikiel. (See recent posts for intros to them!) Justin will continue roasting for you during the week, with Karla’s brother Kevin making sure website orders, subscriptions, and wholesale orders get where they need to be. Every month, we donate 10%+ of profits to a nonprofit making a difference for people, animals, or the planet. May sales, online and in-store, support Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary.
