Through our year-round exhibitions, educational programs, events, and workshops, the Millard Sheets Art Center provides the community with meaningful and fun experiences within the world of visual arts. As part of The Learning Centers at Fairplex, we engage the community at multiple levels of education. Our programs build on The Learning Centers’ (TLC) dedication to create innovative experiences.

It is our goal to create a variety of programs centered on traditional visual arts education that provide anyone with an interest in the arts an opportunity to explore and develop a love and passion for being creative.

Re-post: Millard Sheets Art Center

Raised in Los Angeles, photographer Star Montana () uses her community in Boyle Heights as the backdrop and narrative of her work. By utilizing her family’s photographic archive, Montana’s work recreates spaces and moments that reflect on themes of personal loss and growth. Her carefully reconstructed installations play a personal homage to her family throughout the generations. Her work has been exhibited nationally at Charlie James Gallery (), Residency Art Gallery (), La Plaza de Cultura y Artes () and at Ballroom Marfa (). Montana will be an artist-in-residence at the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation () in 2020. ⁣...⁣“Shifting Aesthetics: A Selection of W⁣orks by 11 Contemporary L.A. The LA County Fair Unearths Long-Buried Stories of Route 66

Thank you to the over 105,000 L.A. County Fair goers who visited Alt 66 last month. Did you catch this great piece by Renée Reizman for Hyperallergic?
"We saw it as an opportunity to create new images, tell stories from different perspectives, and create new iconography or revisions of things we’re so used to seeing” -Thomas Canavan, Arts Manager

Alt 66 gives insight into the lives of those who built, traveled, and lived along the interstate — a diverse blend of race and class, all dreaming of the West.

Alt 66 - LA County Fair - Submission Process Update!

We are simplifying the process and waiving the entry fee.

Alt 66 is and should be a collaborative project and we felt the online submission process was hindering an essential part of the creative process, dialogue. I am encouraging everyone to submit their idea for their installation directly to me at this email: [email protected]

I only need a brief description.

The deadline is still April 1, but this submission process will allow us to talk through your concept in more detail before heading to the jurors, which may help increase its chance for selection.

We’ve also determined that an $11 application fee would be better spent on coffee and tea with me. If you want to get together to talk about your idea, please let me know! If not, treat yourself to some new pencils and get sketching.

Details and deck can be found at www.lacountyfair.com/alt66

Thank you for your time. I’m looking forward to hearing your ideas!

This afternoon Jeff and I decided to cover the LA County Fair

We saw David Judah Oliver and listened to some poetry from Judah and others. His daughter was also there.

Joshua Swodeck was inside the Millard Sheets Art Center and we ran into my BFF Susie Magdalena Perales granddaughter who was there with a friend.

It was 87 degrees by 1 pm - way too 🔥 for me. We waited until 3 pm - it was 84 by that time.

As usual I took a lot of photos. It was pretty busy and there were a lot of guests on rides. 😎🎪🎢🎡🎠🌷🌻🙌🌴🌭we ordered our Pink's Hot Dogs and left after nearly 3 hours of walking.

Chinese artist, Manyu Gao (), uses her work to challenge herself and explore the realities of life. Combining abstract forms and color, Gao investigates the human figure, everyday objects, and food, while contextualizing what the world looks like and feels like to someone who grew up within a different culture. In her work, new understandings are brought to light, portraying new perceptions about the ordinary. By playing with line, two-dimensional texture, and emotion, Gao invites her viewer to see life from a different perspective and experience a glimpse into the world she experiences every day. Gao is currently pursuing her MFA at the ArtCenter College of Design.
Come see this and other great pieces displayed now at the SoCalMFA exhibition.

Multimedia artist, Zafirah Ahmed’s () artwork is informed by her interest in fashion, design, and photography, and her pieces intertwine aspects of painting, printmaking, and graphite. The simple, abstract lines and variety of muted colors used in her artwork reflect her design and photographic choices and influences. Ahmed also utilizes florals, repetitive imagery, and both geometric and organic shapes to compliment the abstractness in her work and push the limits her own artistic aesthetic. The sheer amount of detail and effort can be seen in the minutiae of her drawings and the calligraphic-like lines she creates. Ahmed is currently completing her MFA at Claremont Graduate University.
