Here in the parlor of this Pittsfield home, the clairvoyant "Professor Morris" saw clients in the fall of 1896. Claiming to have come from the court of the Czar, Morris gave advice and predicted the future during his stay in Pittsfield. The mysterious Professor Morris plied his trade in many locations, and 1890s advertisements were found in Indiana, Michigan, and New Orleans papers.

His ads offer no first name or identifying information, so we have no idea who Morris was or where he was born or died, just that he spent the last decade of the 19th century crossing the country with his clairvoyant business, one of hundreds like him to visit the Berkshires.

Pittsfield Parks & Recreation is looking for participants and volunteers for the 2026 Halloween Parade.

This year's parade will be held on Friday, October 30 at 7:00p.m. on Tyler Street.

This year’s parade theme is “Futuristic Frights: The Next 80 Years” and participants are encouraged to imagine what Halloween, and the world, might look like 80 years from now. Instead of traditional ghosts, witches and vampires, participants are encouraged to envision how future technology, science, climate or society could transform what we find scary or mysterious. Think robots and aliens, flying cars and floating buildings, holographic costumes, glowing light displays and more. It will be a celebration of Halloween that meets science fiction, where participants can bring their wildest visions of the future to life.

Every unit will need to review the Halloween Parade Application Packet and complete all applicable forms available on the city's website on the Parks and Recreation page. The deadline for completed forms is Friday, October 9.

Wasn’t she nervous, folks asked - being the first woman to speak at Williams College?

The locals asking her likely did not know that 9 years earlier she had been the first woman in history to address the multitudes in Sultanahmet Square, in that ancient city of Constantinople; that men by the tens of thousands had roared applause at her words - or how they fallen to their knees, tears on their cheeks, pledging themselves to the Turkish revolution as she spoke.
