This week in the MCG Spotlight archives, Marty Ashby welcomes guitarist and educator Mark Koch for a personal tribute to Pat Martino, recorded shortly after Martino’s passing at age 77.

Koch was not just an admirer of Pat’s music — he was a student and friend. He recalls first meeting Martino as a young guitarist, then hearing him perform in 1967 with Gene Ludwig and Randy Gillespie, an experience Koch describes as “like getting struck by lightning.” That sense of awe runs through the entire conversation, as Koch reflects Pat’s sound, discipline, humor, teaching, and the almost spiritual intensity of his improvising.

The playlist follows the stories. Marty opens with “The Visit” from Footprints, the 1972 album he remembers buying when it first came out. Koch then talks about Consciousness, including the solo guitar piece “Bessada,” which he remembers Pat working on after late-night lessons, and Benny Golson’s “Along Came Betty,” praising Martino’s samba feel, precision, and “impeccable time.” The show also reaches into the fusion energy of Joyous Lake with “Songbird,” the playful duet with Les Paul on “I’m Confessin’,” Emily Remler’s Pat-inspired “East to Wes,” and the closing intimacy of “Dreamsville” with Gil Goldstein.

From the MCG Jazz archives, it’s not just a survey of Pat Martino’s recordings — it’s a remembrance through the ears of someone who learned from him, laughed with him, and carried his influence forward.

A vibrant musical journey across the Americas, Panamericana Suite showcases GRAMMY®‑winning clarinetist and saxophonist Paquito D’Rivera at his most adventurous and expressive. Blending jazz, classical, and an array of Latin American traditions, the album moves effortlessly through styles—from Cuban cha cha chá and Brazilian bossa to Argentine tango, Peruvian festejo, and beyond.

Featuring an all‑star ensemble including Edmar Castaneda, Andy Narell, Diego Urcola, Oscar Stagnaro, and Brenda Feliciano, each track explores a new cultural rhythm while staying rooted in D’Rivera’s unmistakable voice. From the spirited “Waltz for Moe” to the sweeping title track and the moving finale “Song for Peace,” this recording is a rich, genre‑bridging celebration of sound, soul, and connection.

This week on the MCG Spotlight Show, we took a deep dive into the calendar and the archives.

We started with a list of jazz artists celebrating May birthdays and cross-referenced it against MCG Jazz's rich performance history. What emerged was more than just a roster of legendary names — it became a musical snapshot of the artists who brought these songs to life right here on our stage.

So, when you hear Betty Carter performing “Tight,” Ron Carter and Jim Hall on “St. Thomas,” Shirley Horn with “Take Love Easy,” or Dee Dee Bridgewater singing “B.A.B.Y.,” you’re not just hearing recordings by artists connected to the MCG Jazz legacy — you’re hearing music that audiences experienced during those live performances right here in the MCG Jazz Music Hall.

Along the way, we’ll also hear tunes from Milt Jackson, Benny Green, Tony Williams, Ramsey Lewis, Maynard Ferguson, Charles Earland, and Charlie Haden — all artists whose music and artistry remain woven into the story and family of MCG Jazz.

It’s part birthday celebration, part archival time capsule, and entirely great jazz on this edition of the MCG Spotlight Show.

For this powerful collaboration with Rufus Reid on bass and Matt Wilson on drums, Jared Sims drew inspiration from “The Analogy of the Sun,” the sixth book of Plato’s Republic, in which Plato defines goodness in the world. Defining goodness in the world is the underlying theme of Sims’ music and his original compositions on Analogy of the Sun serve to express that which cannot be easily expressed by words.

The album also features organist Clifford Barnes and trombonist Reggie Watkins while Sims himself alternates between baritone sax and flute on swinging originals. Sims’ sax has a rich gruffness that works well in contrast to Watkins’ cool bras on the grooving “Illuminating Truth” while the two bop well to Wilson’s cymbals on “Source of Life” and dig in deep to Wilson and Reid on the modal “Dialectic”.

Feel the goodness, own the music.

On this week's MCG Jazz Spotlight Show, host Marty Ashby sits down with actress, director, and producer Tamara Tunie, also serving as the Artist-In-Residence for the 39th season of MCG Jazz.

A familiar face from television, movies, and Broadway, Tamara comes home from starring in the Emmy Award–winning hit daytime drama Beyond the Gates to share stories about growing up in Pittsburgh, her college years at Carnegie Mellon University, and the musical influences that shaped her artistic life.

The playlist traverses Tamara’s own album Dreamsville—including the title track and the Brazilian favorite “Dindi,” recorded in Pittsburgh with jazz legends Roger Humphries, George Heid, and Mike Tomaro—and the music of the artists who shaped her. Tamara shares influential favorites such as Dianne Reeves’ “Endangered Species,” T***s Thielemans’ “Começar de Novo,” and Laurence Hobgood’s “Straighten Up and Fly Right.”

Tamara explains what it means to be “forged in the fire” of Pittsburgh’s work ethic in a warm and wide-ranging conversation that pairs her story with the music that has guided her journey.
