Dear Friends,

In 2014, I attended a bi-lingual poetry reading that Frank Baez from the Dominican Republic and Scott P. Cunningham from Miami gave at Kent State University’s Wick Poetry Center. I was mesmerized.

After the reading, I went to them and told them that, not only did I want to be their friend, which we have been since, but I wanted to read with them one day. It has taken us 12 years for all of us to have new books out to make it happen.

I could not be prouder to announce that on October 15th, all three of us will read poems by one another in our mother’s tongues; English, Haitian Creole, and Spanish. It will be a celebration of poetry and language like you have never seen.

Between planning author events and celebrating great books, we're always reading something. Here's what the Pittsburgh Arts & Lectures team is currently enjoying:

Charlie - "How to See Like a Machine" by Trevor Paglen
I am book-clubbing it with my buddy Justin Audet, photo by Emily Henry (not the famous author haha).

Jordan - "The Mistake" by Elle Kennedy
I don't usually read romance, but it's like candy; sometimes you just need a little sweet treat. And since watching "Off Campus" left a spell on me, I figured I'd indulge in the next book in the series.

Nina - "Everything is Flammable" by Gabrielle Bell
"Everything Is Flammable" is about precarity of every kind: emotional, physical, financial, and familial. In zine-style vignettes, Gabrielle Bell gives us a window into one melancholy, surreal year bookended by fires. It’s an uncomfortable and wonderful read.

A new novel from Barbara Kingsolver is always an event.

Join the Pulitzer Prize-winning author in conversation with singer, painter, and WQED Host Anna Singer on Thursday, October 29, 2026, at 7 p.m. in the Carnegie Music Hall for a discussion of "Partita," a sweeping story of music, memory, ambition, first love, and the enduring power of art. Moving between past and present, Kingsolver's latest follows a former piano prodigy as one unexpected phone call compels her to revisit the defining moments of her life.

Meet the Pittsburgh Arts & Lectures Team: Jordan Snowden, Marketing Specialist

Jordan Snowden () joined the Pittsburgh Arts & Lectures team in May 2025 and hit the ground running with a keen eye for design and a playful, thoughtful approach to social media and marketing. If you've browsed our website, received one of our mailers, or admired a program poster around town, you've already seen Jordan's work—and she's just getting started.

📝 Previous life: Staff writer & music editor at Pittsburgh City Paper, online editor at TABLE Magazine, book marketer at Astra Publishing House, and freelance writer. She's also the monthly crime & mystery columnist for The Seattle Times.

📚 What drew her to PA&L: A lifelong love of books and the communities they create. PA&L felt like a natural place to help connect readers with stories—and each other.

✨ Goals in her role: Make literary events feel welcoming, exciting, and accessible, and help more people discover new authors and Pittsburgh's vibrant literary community.

🎮 Favorite pastimes: Reading (always), cozy gaming, hula hooping, crafting, photography, thrifting, baking, traveling, spending time with her kids, and soaking up the sun whenever possible.

🏝️ Desert island picks: She refuses to answer. Choosing only three books is, in her words, "an act of violence."

What can a man who scattered apple seeds across the frontier still teach us today?

Last night, Isaac Fitzgerald joined Morgan Parker for a conversation about “American Rambler,” his journey following the trail of Johnny Appleseed in search of the man behind the myth.

Together, Isaac and Morgan explored the ways stories shape our understanding of America, why certain legends endure, and what can be uncovered when we choose curiosity over certainty.
