Pittsburgh Jazz Fest 2026 has got the rhythm and the groove!

🥁No one brings the rhythm more than BERNARD "PRETTY" PURDIE who has spent more than six decades making records feel better. The legendary drummer’s unmistakable groove can be heard behind everyone from Aretha Franklin and James Brown to Steely Dan, and his signature Purdie Shuffle has become part of the vocabulary of modern drumming. Purdie has played on more than 4,000 albums and with more than 2,500 artists.

Now he brings that groove to the 2026 Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival, September 19–20, where he’ll be honored with our LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD co-presented by Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield. Purdie will also perform some of his classic material with a band assembled by Pittsburgh’s own, bassist Dwayne Dolphin, a veteran of Fred Wesley and James Brown’s New JB’s.

Other performances led by drummers include Terri Lyne Carrington and Nate Smith
