Today we honor Imani — Faith.
Faith in our people.
Faith in our culture.
Faith in the future we are building together.

Imani calls us to believe — even when the road is hard — in the power of our communities, our creativity, and our collective vision. It reminds us that our ancestors dreamed of this moment, and it’s up to us to carry it forward.

Imani lives in every young artist finding their voice and every elder passing down wisdom.

We believe in us.

Happy Kwanzaa and Happy New Year from BTAN!

Today we honor Kuumba — Creativity.

The responsibility to leave our communities more beautiful, more powerful, and more alive than we found them.

Kuumba is in every song, every mural, every poem, every dance, and every story we tell. It’s how we imagine new worlds, and revisit the old ones.

Creativity isn’t just expression — it’s transformation. Ans it’s how culture becomes movement and how vision becomes reality.

Happy Kwanzaa from BTAN.

Today we honor Nia — Purpose.

The call to build and develop our communities in ways that reflect our highest values.

Nia asks us why we create, why we organize, and why we show up — not just for ourselves, but for those who came before us and those still to come. Our art, our work, and our service all carry meaning when rooted in purpose.

Nia lives in nurturing Black creativity, amplifying unheard voices, and shaping futures where our people can thrive.

Let your purpose guide your path.

Happy Kwanzaa from BTAN.

Habari Gani!? Today we honor Ujamaa — Cooperative Economics.

The principle of supporting Black-owned businesses, investing in our communities, and building wealth together.

Ujamaa reminds us that every dollar we circulate locally strengthens our people — from artists and organizers to entrepreneurs and educators. When we choose to support one another, we create sustainable futures rooted in care, not exploitation.

Ujamaa looks like creative ecosystems where everyone has a stake and every contribution matters.

Together, we build. Together, we thrive.
Happy Kwanzaa from BTAN!

Today we honor Ujima — Collective Work and Responsibility.

A reminder that we rise by lifting one another.
Ujima calls us to care for our communities as if they are our own families — because they are. To solve problems together, to build together, and to make sure no one is left behind.

Ujima lives in collaboration: artists sharing resources, mentors guiding the next generation, and creatives coming together to turn vision into action.

When we work together, our impact multiplies.
Happy Kwanzaa from BTAN! Habari Gani!?

Today we honor Kujichagulia — Self-Determination.

To define ourselves.
To name ourselves.
To speak for ourselves.
To create our own futures.

This means telling our stories in our own voices, building platforms for our people, and refusing to let others limit who we are or what we can become.

Every artist, every elder, every young creator — you are the author of your own narrative.
Stand in your truth. Create without apology.

Habari Gani!?

Today we begin Kwanzaa by honoring Umoja — Unity.

A reminder that our strength lives in how we show up for one another:
in our families, our neighborhoods, our creative spaces, and our movements.

Umoja means artists supporting artists, elders guiding youth, and community shaping culture — together. When we move in unity, we don’t just survive… we build futures.

May today be a moment to reconnect, reflect, and recommit to each other.

Happy Kwanzaa from BTAN!

Only 10 days left to apply!

Are you a practicing artist who teaches as well? Do you know some folks who love their craft AND engaging their community?

BTAN is accepting applications for Creative Residency until 12/15!

Keep reading and check out the graphics for details!

At the heart of BTAN’s creative education and youth development work is a brilliant and dynamic group of intergenerational, multi-disciplinary practicing and teaching artists who make up the Creatives in Residence Program.

Each year a new group of Creatives is selected and completes Praxis training, BTAN’s professional learning series. Resident Artists engage in coaching and professional development to provide guided support and creative instruction to youth across a variety of artistic disciplines and class subjects, practicing in both the school and community setting.

Beginning with a school-based residency in partnership with the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, CIRs support classroom teachers to deliver culturally engaged creative instruction that supports learning objectives. Next, building on their engagement and facilitation skills, Creatives in Residence continue to nurture their own craft and practice before diving into our summer series where they mentor the youth artists of Creative Black Futures.

This residency juxtaposes applied learning with creative practice. With the support of the Network, Creatives in Residence build their individual artistic profile and creative practice in tandem with the youth they nurture and uplift, becoming better teachers, learners, and practitioners of their craft. Strong applicants for this role will demonstrate a commitment to or history of community engagement, artistic practice, and adeptness in educational settings. Act 33/34 Clearance required. Applications close midnight December 15.
