Join us on Zoom for Tea, Poison, and Murder at this afternoon program!

Secret Science Club presents Chemist & Best-selling Author Kathryn Harkup on “V IS FOR VENOM: Agatha Christie’s Chemicals of Death,” FREE!

Live via Zoom on SUNDAY, June 29, 2PM (Eastern Time USA) "Doors" open at 1:30PM

Shhh... we will email you the Zoom link and password the night before.

At the next Secret Science Club Online, we dive into poison, Agatha Christie's murder mysteries, chemical science and true crime. Jumping off from her new book V is for Venom: Agatha Christie’s Chemicals of Death, chemist-turned-author Kathryn Harkup investigates the science behind deadly substances, the history of their use in real-life murder cases, and how feasible it was to administer and detect these poisons in Christie's era and today.

The Queen of Crime, Christie perfected the use of poisons in her plots. Indeed, her clever and fatally accurate employment of toxins is one of her great strengths as a mystery writer. But why are some compounds so lethal, and in such tiny amounts? Come explore all things poison with us on Sunday. It would be a crime to miss it!

KATHRYN HARKUP is a chemist turned author. She writes on the crossover between science, literature, and pop culture. Her first book was the international best-seller A is for Arsenic: The Poisons of Agatha Christie, which was shortlisted for a Mystery Readers International Macavity Award and a BMA Book Award. Her subsequent books include V is for Venom, Making the Monster: The Science of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, and Death by Shakespeare. Kathryn also loves talking about the geeky and gory side of science—and she is happy to help develop (fictional) plots to take over the world, or advise on how to protect yourself from poisoners or the undead.

BEFORE & AFTER

--Brew up a pot of your favorite tea, and settle in for a compelling “howdunnit”

--Groove to suspenseful tunes and crime jazz

--Bring your questions for the live Q&A

--Snag a copy of Kathryn Harkup’s delicious new book V IS FOR VENOM

This is a FREE event.

Secret Science Club NC presents free talk on CORAL REEFS by Stephanie Peak followed by audience Q&A
"FEAST OR PHOTOSYNTHESIS: Feeding Strategies in a Temperate Coral"

The symbiosis between corals and their algal partners is essential for the survival of tropical coral reef ecosystems. Through photosynthesis, algae provide their coral hosts with up to 95% of the nutrients they need to thrive. But high seawater temperatures can disrupt this relationship in a process which often leads to coral death,. This in turn can trigger the collapse of the entire reef ecosystem and result in severe societal, economic, and environmental impacts.
Understanding how temperate corals can survive without symbiotic algae—unlike their tropical counterparts—can provide insight into potential mechanisms of coral resilience and inform future conservation strategies in changing oceans.

Stephanie Peak is a 4th-year PhD student at UNC Chapel Hill. She earned her bachelor’s degrees in Chemistry and Cell and Molecular Biology from the University of South Florida in 2021, and was awarded the prestigious National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship in 2022. Her graduate research focuses on understanding the complex relationships between cnidarians (including jellyfish, anemones, and corals) and the microalgae that live within them. Studying these relationships is crucial to ensure the long-term health and survival of coral reefs in a changing world.

Arrive early to get good seats and a drink. Show starts at 7:00 sharp.
Our theme cocktail for the evening will be the REEF MADNESS 🌊🌊🌊
Stay for the audience Q& A with Stephanie after the talk!
