This project was driven by the local community. The artists pulled off the design in 48 hours. Made it to the office of Transportation, budgeting partners, the mayor's office on Friday morning.
Saturday we had 200 volunteers from the city, we ran out of supplies, we ran out of paint.
There was no time to budget a strategy for each wave of volunteers because the design had to be tweaked due to the complexity and our supply inventory, and unknown skill level of so many volunteers working at once. While all that is possible, logistically it would all have to be worked out on paper and we’d have to design a volunteer system, there wasn’t any time for that. We worked with the systems in place and made this work - this will open the door for future conversations for local black artists in our community with the city, with the county, and other organizations who organize public art.
The first project came together beautifully, and we can’t wait to work on the next one.
