Last week, I learned that I won Honorable Mention for my piece, Brutal History. It features the Montgomery Greyhound Bus Station at 210 South Court Street, which was the site of violent attacks on Freedom Riders during the Civil Rights Movement. The building now serves as home to the Freedom Rides Museum.
Just days after I completed this mixed media piece, the Freedom Rides Museum unveiled updated, lighted panels along the exterior of the building. The panels provide additional information on the role of the Rides in the Civil Rights Movement. (Because they were added later, they are not included on my work.)
I chose this location after completing my Honors English class at St James School assignments to read, To Kill A Mockingbird and Just Mercy, along with tours of the Equal Justice Initiative's Legacy Museum. I also visited many of the historical locations in Selma earlier this year. The culmination of these lessons served as my inspiration for this piece.
This Saturday from 10am to 3pm, the museum commemorates the 62nd anniversary of the Freedom Rides.
