A short clip from some of yesterday‘s epoxy pour. This is some medium dark brown epoxy poured onto a lovely hard maple slab.

It’s been a long overdue week of shop upgrades and equipment tuning. While it’s not the most fun part of woodworking, it is both necessary and highly satisfying. Back at it next week.

One stack down. Four to go. Putting those repeatable, accurate and safe miter cuts to the test. Feels good. Dust collection isn’t perfect given the required clearance to the miter gauge. As a result, I just pushed the arm aside in this case. Perhaps a little experimenting with a dust boot is in order….

What would you do with those 48” wide salvaged Black Walnut slabs? A little organization goes a loooong way to feeling de-cluttered and inspired. It was a bit of a chase to purchase those slabs and, while I’ve know they were back there that did little to inspire. Today alone, I had three people see their future dining room table from one of those beauties. I came across those slabs about a year ago at a local sawmill. A 48” wide black walnut is on the rare side in southern Ontario. After a serendipitous chase the tree’s owner agreed to sell me a few slabs once they came out of the kiln. The challenge was to know when they were dry to gently remind the owner of our gentlemen’s agreement. Needless to say, it all worked out just perfectly. Now they wait to find their future home. DM me if you’d like to make it your home.

Adding some bow ties (aka Dutchman, butterfly, dovetail key) to this Maple slab. Some of these inlays are necessary and are therefore structural. The ones with funky grain patterns are purely cosmetic.

I’ve been working on the floating night stands for this Alaskan King bed. There was much to account for in these compact units. It’s been both a great thought and practical exercise. The next step is determining the process behind a worn Victorian era blackish brown finish.

I thoroughly enjoyed making this stool. I learned a tremendous amount throughout the process and I’m quite happy with how it turned out. The wood species is white ash. The finish is six coats of Tung oil. I’ve really come to love this stuff! I took the time to make proper jigs and templates through the process. Something I too often skip in the name of expedience. I look forward to the next.

Ripping some 10’ long 8/4 red oak with my trusted TS 75 track saw. Two passes in this case. I have the 8’ and the 3’ tracks connected together. I typically go three passes. Nice and steady. The CT 36 E dust collection has LOTS of power. Given how much dust this type of cut generates a little dust off the top is to be expected.

I just put the finish on this lovely credenza. Part of the end of year push. The client hand sketched this legs based on the inspiration piece they’d seen in a local shop. Turning vision into reality is always a beautiful feeling. Wood: white ash Finish: Oyster Happy holidays everyone!

In the process of making some benches out of this gorgeous reclaimed Elm. It could be scarcity influencing my feelings but I find Elm completely stunning. The +100 years of aging has given the wood a deep and distinct patina that rather noteworthy. I’ll be ripping that glue up down the middle next but, today I squared off the edges. Given that I tend to make larger pieces, the track saw is indispensable in my tool collection. # wood 🇨🇦

Two round tables. It’s three additional steps to a round table. Plunge cut with a router to about half the thickness. Use the jigsaw to cut off the remaining edge. Clean that jigsaw line off with a flush trim bit. 🇨🇦

Troweling concrete, in the hands of a true craftsman, can yield an incredibly distinct texture. It is a skill I’ve yet to develop. It is on my long list of skills I’d like to develop. In this case, I’m troweling the underside of the countertop and thus, flat and uniform is the goal. It’s also a good opportunity to see if there are any low spots needing additional fibres. 🇨🇦
