🐜On June 19, 1954 β€œThem!” was released in theaters! Directed by Gordon Douglas (They Call Me Mister Tibbs!), and starring James Whitmore, Edmund Gwenn, Joan Weldon, Onslow Stevens, Sandy Descher, and James Arness. The film is based on an original story treatment by George Worthing Yates (It Came from Beneath the Sea), which was then developed into a screenplay by Ted Sherdeman (Latitude Zero) and adaptation by Russell Hughes. In the film, a nest of gigantic irradiated ants is discovered in the New Mexico desert, and they quickly become a national threat when it is found that two young queens and their consorts have escaped to establish new colonies. Them! is one of the first of the 1950s "nuclear monster" films, and the first "big bug" feature film to use insects as the monster. The Wilhelm scream, created three years earlier for the film Distant Drums, is used during the action sequences. The special effects were handled by Ralph Ayres. Leonard Nimoy has a small, uncredited part. Dub Taylor and Richard Deacon also appear in small roles. John Wayne saw the film and, impressed with Arness' performance, recommended him for the role of Marshal Matt Dillon in the new Gunsmoke TV series, a role that Arness would play from 1955 to 1975.🐜

On June 19, 1957 β€œI Was a Teenage Werewolf” was released in theaters! Directed by Gene Fowler Jr. (I Married a Monster from Outer Space) and starring Michael Landon as a troubled teenager who transforms into a werewolf after being subjected to hypno-regression therapy by a corrupt psychiatrist. The makeup effects were designed by artist Philip Scheer. It also features Yvonne Lime and Whit Bissell. Dawn Richard, who plays a teenaged gymnast in the film, was a Pl***oy centerfold, appearing in the magazine's May 1957 issue. Co-written (with Aben Kandel) and produced by cult film producer Herman Cohen, it was one of the most successful films released by American International Pictures. This film was the first of three "teenage monster" movies produced by AIP during 1957. I Was a Teenage Frankenstein and Blood of Dracula were both released in November of 1957 and feature a teenage boy transformed into a Frankenstein's monster and a teenage girl transformed into a werewolf-like vampire.
