Adama Théophile is the 15-year-old student who was rescued by the army rescue after spending nearly five hours trapped in the floodwaters of the Mayo Palar River in Maroua.

The teenager had jumped into the river to save a friend who was drowning after a football match. He successfully helped his friend out of the fast-rising waters but became trapped himself between rocks as the swollen river continued to surge. After a tense rescue operation, soldiers managed to bring Théophile to safety.

His courage has since been widely praised. The First Deputy Mayor of Maroua III, Aliou Mohamadou, sent a delegation to congratulate and encourage the young hero. The Al-Hayat NGO also announced that it will cover Théophile's school fees until he completes his education.

The incident has also served as a reminder of the dangers posed by rivers during the rainy season, with authorities urging parents and children to exercise greater caution around floodwaters.
