OC Zine Fest

OC Zine Fest OCZF was started by a network of artists, writers, musicians, designers, poets and activists engaged Since 2014.

OC Zine Fest hopes to promote zine culture in Orange County, create connections between zinesters in the area, and to encourage artists and non-artists to discover zines as an alternative form of expression. Besides zines, OCZF also aims to provide musical and artistic entertainment for visitors as well as fun and enlightening workshops, uniting the art, music and cultural scenes local to our community. OC Zine Fest's 2017 event will take place August 19 at the Anaheim Public Library.

Thank you to everyone who came out to this weekend! Thank you to the zinesters who shared their work, for delicious food, and all of you who showed up. It was our first in-person event since the pandemic we could be happier with the turn out.

A huge shout out to artist and for creating this years posters.

And to the volunteers who helped make this years Zine Fest happen.

See y’all again soon.

Hi everyone! I’m Sam (she/they) , one of the comic artists tabling at the oc zine fest. I’ll be taking over the ig account today! ^_^

I make comics around overlooked histories, the natural world, dreams, and more—mostly within a framework of Japanese and Japanese American history and mythology. Pictured are some of the zines I’ll be bringing to the oc zine fest!

There’s comics about food, mythology, Japanese American farming history, horror short stories, and a children’s picture book about moon rabbits 🍡 I haven’t tabled since 2019 so some of these zines are a bit old/pre pandemic (kind of like time capsules haha) but I also will be bringing/debuting a new zine, The Moon Jar, that I’ve been working on the past spring and summer ❤️

please comment, dm, & send any questions (about zine and comics making, art, what I’m working on, media recs, etc.) through the story feature and I’ll try my best to answer them :)

Thank you to the oczine fest and for putting together such a great event 🥰

Hi everyone! I’m Jay, aka 😊 I’m taking over the OC Zine Fest insta for today!

Here are some pics of me and a few of my zines! I make zines out of art, comics, poetry, and experimental writing. My most recent zine, “A Six Letter Word for Slime,” invents a new gender identity by collaging words and images taken from Wikipedia. Other zines include “To Live in CA,” an experimental zine featuring SoCal-related suggestions, “Ghost Princess Vol 1 & 2,” a comic mini-zine showing the life and times of Ghost Princess the character, and “My hair is let down & I feel like forgiving,” a poetry perzine.

Find me at the fest at the Ghost Princess table 💖 I hope to see you there!!!

Finally! The pièce de résistance! Here are most of things I’ll be bringing with me to !
🤠
Fanzines about karaoke, King of the Hill, dogs, Bravo’s Top Chef, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Colorful mini zines on many, many different topics. Perzines about mental health and gender identity. All kinds of shiny buttons, stickers, and zine kandi!
🤠
If you see me at the fest, stop by and say hi! I’m really looking forward to tabling in SoCal again. If you can’t wait for the fest, you can find my work on Etsy - there’s a link on my profile 🥰 Long Arm Stapler signing off, but stay tuned for more IG takeovers from other zinesters leading up to the fest!!

I mentioned in a story that I print at home and I wanted to go into a little more detail about that! I have three printers (an inkjet with a scanner, a laser jet workhorse, and an industrial copy machine).
🖨
I was luckily enough to get all three for VERY cheap and to have the space in my house for all of them. They all perform different functions and are all essential to my zine making process!
🖨
I usually make a mini zine by hand, and then scan it and make a copy on my inkjet. This way, I have a digital master for printing later. If it’s b&w, I’ll fire off a bunch of copies on my laserjet on fun colored paper. If it’s in color, I’ll make copies on my RICOH (it came with a bunch of backup toner and it’s generally cheaper than using the printer ink). I haven’t been able to configure my RICOH to print wirelessly, and it’s slow/jams sometimes, so when I print on that, I camp out in my (very warm) garage for a while. My perzines are all b&w, so I fire those off on my laserjet or RICOH as well. For fanzines, I’ll usually print a copy on my inkjet and then make copies on my RICOH. I don’t necessarily think there’s any actual rhyme or reason to this process, it just seems right in my head 🤪
🖨
What are your preferred printing methods??

As I’ve been slowly starting to table irl events again, I’ve found that it’s been important to step up my table presentation game. For a long time, I was a flat-on-the-table kinda guy. However, I’ve noticed that people are more likely to pick stuff up if it’s elevated! So I went to Daiso and got some zine holders - a few for mini zines (that I’m going to add something to the bottom of to elevate them like stadium seating… and maybe paint if I have time 😇 ), a few for larger zines, and then two boxes (with handles!) to hold all my zines to and from the fest. I’m hoping this will keep me better organized. I also always use a tablecloth, but I haven’t decided which one I’ll bring to yet. I used to be part of a distro called Q***r Anxiety Babiez (rip) and we always used an old Powerpuff Girls sheet!
