How To: Lose Control (2021) is part of Mr. Moda’s How To: Be An Artist series, using a chaotic skeletal figure as a metaphor for the loss of control within both the individual and society. Built upon a visual blueprint referencing the World Trade Center and New York City, the work layers imagery connected to the social, political, and cultural climate of 2018–2021.

The piece explores the intersections of mental and physical health, consumerism, food and corporate influence, propaganda, racial injustice, and the Black Lives Matter movement. Commercial symbols and anatomical imagery collide with handwritten marks, arrows, diagrams, and fragmented references to contemporary culture, suggesting how information, advertising, politics, and social trauma can affect the body and mind.

Rather than addressing “losing control” solely as a personal or mental-health experience, Mr. Moda expands the idea into a broader question: How much control do we truly have over our bodies, our thoughts, our consumption, and the society surrounding us? The work reflects the instability and overwhelming cultural contradictions of its era while remaining distinctly rooted in the artist’s New York perspective.
