When a patient passed away while receiving care at the Emergency Department at Dimmit Regional Hospital, Jerry Miller, RN went above and beyond to ensure they were treated with dignity and respect. He took time to remove medical equipment and tubes and clean and prepare the patient so their family could say a proper goodbye.
When a teammate asked him why he took that extra step, Jerry responded, “It was just the right thing to do.”
Jerry explained that he didn’t want the family members to sit and grieve with their loved ones without knowing someone had cared for them every step of the way. To him, it was a simple act of compassion, “It’s what nurses do.”
The family may never know that it was Jerry who provided that final act of care. Yet those are the acts that often bring comfort during moments of profound loss and heartbreak.
In recognition of his extraordinary compassion, Jerry was honored with a DAISY Award from the DAISY Foundation.
