Right on time for the new energy of 2026, our small but mighty film will be on view in Annapolis, MD all year.
Alongside the film, my sculptural study “A PROVENANCE” will be featured. Exhibition opens to the public February 7th!
2021 when I started making these objects my focus was on using the cowries as an abacus of sorts, the spirits moving through me so numerous as I was reading stories, and interpreting images from - last year I realised that they are, too, fingerprints… the essence of ourselves left behind on the mundane, evidence of life after flesh. The practice of building a sheath around the everyday items, a rolling pin, a telephone, a tool harkened a new approach for my inquiries, not performance, but preservation. Not patterned speaking, but historical patterns creating visual textures. An accidental sculpturing. Yes, I could own that physical art practice too.
When we made the film, I wanted to take objects that I could recall Aunt Paulette and Aunt Donna’s using often and immortalise their touch. Consistently building upon and contributing to the strength of their vision for years, I thought reflective glasses would be the most dynamic expression. The all white suits reflecting the sunlight, the vibrant green and blue of the sky- an iconic scene was born. Another provenance moment. A statement that: Yes we own our image and likeness too.
Having the opportunity to share in the newly renamed institution, the nod to Auntie Harriet being recent, we are ecstatic. The aunties were given the Harriet Tubman Lifetime Achievement Award from the state of Maryland late 2024, and have since had their work acknowledged by multiple historic preservation organizations!
