Let’s take a moment to shine a light on Sandra.

Here, Sandra shares her poem, Shy. Sandra is a shining example of quiet strength. In addition to being a published poet, she is also a talented photographer whose work has been featured in multiple Photography Without Borders publications. Her photography is also showcased on the back cover of The Person in the Mirror.

In her poem, Sandra courageously reflects on living with anxiety and autism, offering readers an honest glimpse into her world.

And just like that…a C2L summer comes to a close.

Over the past several weeks, these students chose to be honest with themselves, with one another, and with the blank pages in front of them. They reflected on identity, perspective, growth, and the person they see when they look in the mirror.

Every page in The Person in the Mirror is proof that young people have stories worth telling when someone creates space for them to be heard. And to this group, please continue sharing your stories and your voices. You are so needed.

Sometimes the most powerful part of finding your voice is overcoming the fear of using it.

At 14, Esme entered this program convinced that she would not enjoy writing. Instead, she discovered that poetry gave her a way to release what she was carrying, connect with new friends and feel better through expressing herself.

That growth became even more visible while filming promotional videos for the book. Esme was extremely nervous and struggled to get through the video at first. With encouragement from the students around her, she worked through those emotions, found her confidence and delivered a rock solid video.

It was a profound and emotional moment, and all of us were incredibly proud of her.

Two different languages. A friendship that didn’t need translation.

When Jefferson Martínez Sánchez began the program, he didn’t know anyone. Over time, he found good people, new friendships and a special connection with his partner, Kevin.

Although Jefferson speaks Spanish and Kevin speaks English, they found a way to communicate, work together and become close friends. Their friendship represents the heart of The Person in the Mirror: when we make the effort to understand another person’s perspective, we discover how much we share.

Jefferson and Kevin are pictured together on the back cover of the book, capturing a friendship that became one of the most meaningful stories to come from this program.

It was special seeing our worlds collide at the Lighthouse Field. 💙

Students from the C2L photography, music, and poetry cohorts came together for pizza, student-made music, and performances from The Person in the Mirror. Different art forms, one creative community.
