As we celebrate Our Country's 250th Birthday today, we though we share some information of the oldest apple in the USA.

Roxbury Russet is the oldest known apple to have originated in America. A seedling from a European apple brought to America by the early colonists and discovered by Ebenezer Davis in 1635 on his farm in Roxbury Massachusetts. A popular apple grown all through the colonies and beyond, including being heavy grown in the south. Roxbury Russet has a slight tendency (easily managed by thinning) to biennialism. Roxbury is tip bearing variety. This late-season apple is large, green-gold, and covered with a fine russet that thickens toward the stem. The flesh is hard, granular, and crunchy. Harvest early and the flavor will be incredibly tart, but let the apples hang on the tree a bit longer to allow the sugars to develop for a sweeter flavor. Roxbury Russet will store for five months during which time the flavor will continue to develop and sweeten. Highly prized for cider due to its high sugar content Roxbury also makes an excellent fresh eating apple as well as baking and sauce. Ripens in October.

We have Roxbury Russet trees available for sale along with several other heirloom varieties. Our stand is open today and tomorrow, stop by to check out our full selection of fruit trees.
