After I finished my last cat painting, a facebook friend in Ireland posted a picture of this sweetie - wishing her a Happy Birthday. I decided to paint her because I hadn't done any paintings of tortoiseshell cats recently, I loved her expression , and loved too the fact that she was happily smiling from inside a box. Unfortunately, I cannot find the post, so I cannot share her name. I'm calling this 8 x 8" Watercolor and ink piece, "Ooo ... a Birthday box!" I really like the way she turned out. I hope her owner(s) do too. What do you think?

I'm so happy to be back to painting (stomach flu), so I could finish this watercolor and ink portrait of my niece, Evelyn. I painted her before - when she was younger, but in the past decade, I realized I kept painting her girls and not her. So, on Friday I found a picture of her when she recently visited us, and started the painting. I didn't like the color of her sweater for the painting, so (since I was painting it as a surprise) I contacted her youngest to find out what colors she though looked best on her mom. Thorough person that her daughter is, she sent me photos of Evelyn in the colors she thought both looked best and that her mom liked. What a fun collaboration to made the painting. I really like it, and so do they. I hope you do too.

On Saturday, Arny took me to Newark, Delaware to let me pick out some Valentine's presents at Jerry's Artorama. While there, I bought a variety of types of watercolor paper to see which one(s) I want to use as I focus more on creating watercolor and ink pieces. I created this painting on one of those papers: piece, that I call "Snow Geese Returning," is the first piece I've painted on one of the papers. Legion's 10 x 14" 140 lb. Stonehenge Aqua Cold Press, 100% Cotton paper on a block. The image I chose to paint represents my desire for this endless-seeming winter to end. In our area, snow geese return in large numbers as winter turns to spring. I love that the wing beats of the four birds in this piece demonstrate so beautifully how snow geese fly.

How did the paper perform? It was on a block, so it didn't buckle, no matter how many glazes of paint I applied to it. However, the painting has a softer feel than I wanted, and I think that the paper's surface contributed to that. The paper also got a little damaged when I too quickly tried to lift the masking fluid I had spilled outside of the painting's white areas I was trying to preserve. But, that was on me. When I removed the rest of the masking fluid after it had fully dried, the paper had no problems. That being said, I still like the piece, and hope you do too.

I was inspired to create this little (5.5 x 5.5") watercolor and ink sketch by wanting to produce some works for this month's Ian Fennerly's Urbansketch Plus painting challenge. The challenge is to create works only using two colors. When looking for an image to paint, I came across this photo I took years ago when we were visiting northern California. I loved the warm/cool contrast of brightly lit (and deeply shadowed) kelp lying on the sand. One of the things that particularly fascinated me was how the color of the kelp's bulbs and stems changed from warm to cool and light to dark ochre. That gave me ochre as one of the colors. Then, I did a computer search and found that blues are the complement of Ochre. Since blue is the perfect color choice for shadows, I realized that in this photo I had the image and my color choices for my piece. I wanted some more warmth in parts of the kelp, so I added some cad red to the ocher in those areas (to turn the ochre into a "red ochre). In the end, I really liked this piece, and hope you do too. This morning, we got up early because Renewal by Anderson people are coming to replace all the windows on our first and upper floors. So, to help me be patient while waiting for them to arrive to do that, I sketched my front door area. It was fun playing with all the curves and angles.

We were wondering how Fox News could continue to twist the news to support the version of ICE (aka, Trump´s secret police) actions. What we witnessed today on the Fox ‘news” show was them continuing to uncritically support ICE even as ICE increasingly is going after non-criminal, non-citizens, and people of color Citizens, and even American Citizens who have the audacity to question and recording ICE’s unconstitutional and cruel tactics. Fox continues to uncritically support ICE when it attacks citizens who try to aid those who ICE assalts, kidnaps, and arrests.
When we checked out Fox’s reporting on yesterday’s ex*****on of a US citizen who was trying to aid someone arbitrarily pepper-sprayed and knocked down by ICE. When we did, we realized Fox twists its coverage in a number of ways. First, while the report on both what the administration and others say about happened, they characterize the statements of non-administration sources as dangerous and non-American. Fox does not fact check claims that the victims of ICE's violence have terroristic affiliations, bad motives, and had taken aggressive, criminal actions before being atttacke by ICE. Instead, Fox repeats and amplifies the ICE claims against its victims. Fox also will keep repeating ICE’s smears even after evidence comes to light showing ICE’s claims are false. Further, Fox keeps spreading the same lies while claiming that there is no way to decide whose versions of the facts are true. They make these awful claims even thought it, like anyone who has the internet) has the opportunity to view clear video evidence contradicting ICE’s versions of the events.
Fox’s aggressive ignoring, and mis-representation, of facts dressed up as reporting, is making it more and more clear that Fox no longer is a news organization. It has fully transitioned into the propaganda arm of the Trump administration. And, those who continue to rely on Fox “reporting” to decide what is happening in our country, need to admit to themselves that they continue to follow Fox “news” so they do not have to admit to themselves that this administration is working to replace our constitutional democracy with a fascist dictatorship.
