All the tois to two QAM artists opening CARMEN with Piedmont Opera tonight: Dean Anthony directing and Richard Ollarsaba, Bass-baritone singing Escamillo.

Today's performing artists face countless hurdles and are required to develop a tenacity and fortitude that most can barely imagine.

Toni Marie Palmertree, Soprano recently shared her incredible story with the team at OperaWire. The artist's bravery and grace in the face of adversity, both onstage and off, offer insights into just how impactful her principal role debut this Saturday evening at The Metropolitan Opera as Cio-Cio-San in Puccini's Madama Butterfly will be.

A soprano known for her “tender and expressive voice” (SF Examiner) Toni Marie Palmertree is described as giving "riveting" performances of Tosca, Donna Elvira, and Nedda across America.

Happy Opening to QAM bass Brian Kontes in the final production of Sarasota Opera's 2026 Winter Opera Festival: SUSANNAH. Mr. Kontes debuts the role of Elder McLean with stage director Martha Collins and conductor Jessé Martins.

Carlisle Floyd's opera takes place in 1950s rural Tennessee and follows an innocent young woman as she falls under the jealous scrutiny of her rural Appalachian community. The production honors the 100th anniversary of Carlisle Floyd's birth, which coincides with the Florida festival's celebration of 100 years in the Sarasota Opera House.

This season's Winter Opera Festival has also also featured performances of LA BOHÈME (in which Mr. Kontes performed the role of Benoit) and THE MERRY WIDOW (led by QAM conductor Anthony Barrese).

This evening, Washington National Opera celebrates its 70th anniversary with an opening performance of TREEMONISHA featuring QAM mezzo-soprano Tichina Vaughn performing the role of Monisha in her WNO debut. In a true full-circle moment, the production is being presented in Lisner Auditorium at George Washington University – the same venue where WNO gave its very first performances 70 years ago!

The opening showcases a newly commissioned adaptation of Scott Joplin's unfinished opera. Composer Damien Sneed and playwright Kyle Bass have completed Joplin's work into this fully realized production, directed by Denyce Graves and conducted by Kedrick Armstrong. The opera blends ragtime, Black folk-songs, spirituals, ballet, and traditional operatic elements in telling the story of Treemonisha, an educated freedwoman on a former plantation in 1884, as she challenges superstition and defies conjurers to become her community’s teacher and leader. The production also features Viviana Goodwin in title role and Justin Austin as Remus.

This evening, QAM bass Zachary James reprises his signature role of Amenhotep III (The Scribe) in Philip Glass' AKHNATEN with LA Opera, alongside countertenor John Holiday in the titular role and conductor Dalia Stasevska in the pit. Director Phelim McDermott revives his visually arresting production, replete with soaring acrobats, astonishing jugglers, and towering sets.

Originally scheduled for six performances, and overwhelming demand for tickets inspired the addition of a seventh show. The production runs through March 22nd.

Mr. James most recently performed the role last fall in Barcelona with Gran Teatre del Liceu, and will reprise it at Het Concertgebouw Amsterdam this summer (having previously performed it there in 2016, as well as at The Metropolitan Opera in 2019 and 2022, and English National Opera in 2023).

James, who is a BroadwayWorld Vocalist of the Decade, was the recipient of a GRAMMY award in 2022 (Best Opera Recording) for his collaboration on the Metropolitan Opera's recording of the production, further cementing his association with both Glass' compositions in general and this work in particular.

Detroit’s Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts has launched a new Classic Opera Series, bringing opera back to the Music Hall for the first time in thirty years. Tonight, they present a star-studded, one-night-only concert production of Puccini's TURANDOT featuring Christine Goerke, Latonia Moore, Limmie Pulliam, and QAM artists Jason Ferrante and Richard Ollarsaba, Bass-baritone singing Pong and Ping, respectively. Ferrante has performed the role previously, (under the baton of Lorin Maazel in Guangzhou, China) and this is an important role debut for Ollarsaba.

The event is notable for numerous reasons: aside from marking 100 years since TURANDOT's premiere in 1926, it will also feature a newly commissioned, 40-piece reduction of the original arrangements by David Karp. Tois all around to everyone involved!
