Washing the pieces out. It’s very important to ensure that you get as much residual dye out as possible to prevent the colors from blending into the white areas or together. You start with cold water until the water runs clear. If the items were tied they are untied and opened up. Then you add some dawn dish soap and use hot water until the water runs clear again. Now it’s time to wash them in the washer. We run them through the washer twice, first with more dawn (a little goes a LONG way 😬) then the second time with washing soda to ensure that all residual dye is removed and the colors are set. Blue dye requires lots of heat to properly set. Ensuring that the dye is set and no residual dye remains protects the customer from any bleeding when they wash their new items or get them wet!

In Greece stray cats are part of a colony and widely accepted by society. The cats are social and typically well cared for. In America stray cats are often feral and seen as being a nuisance. If they are lucky TNR programs will provide as much care as possible with rescues overflowing with unwanted cats.

Greece has taken a powerful stand for animals with a law that sends a very clear message about cruelty. 🐾

The Hellenic Parliament unanimously voted to strengthen the country’s animal protection laws, upgrading serious acts of cruelty from a minor offense to a felony. Under the updated legislation, harming stray animals through acts such as poisoning, torture, or intentional killing can carry prison sentences of up to 10 years and fines that can reach €50,000 for each animal involved.

The vote was not close or divided. Every member of parliament supported the measure, reflecting a strong national stance that violence against animals must be treated as a serious crime rather than a small violation.

Animal welfare advocates say the change is especially important for stray animals, which are often the most vulnerable. By applying severe penalties and treating cruelty as a major offense, the law aims to deter abuse and reinforce the idea that animals deserve protection under the justice system.

Many supporters believe measures like this set an important example. Strong laws, consistent enforcement, and public awareness all play a role in protecting animals and creating safer communities for both people and animals alike.

Let’s talk about another technique! Muck dying is when the ice dyed items are dyed in a container with no drainage and then left in the melted ice water and dye until fully batched. You “don’t mess with the muck”! There is some kind of “magic” in this process and the results are typically darker and more blended giving a “muddy” finish.
For this batch we are experimenting with using dye that has already been mixed with soda ash and sprinkling it using a shaker. Part of being an artist is experimenting so that you can continue to learn and grow! This means that there is likely room for improvement, the items chosen for this are such that if the project fails it will simply be a learning experience and not a loss!
We hope that everyone takes chances to express themselves and learn 💕

It’s melting 🫠 So watching ice melt is not that interesting, however watching the colors start to show is! The workshop temperature was stuck at 70 degrees yesterday so it will likely take another 24 hours before this can be washed out. For the dyes to set properly they need to be kept at a minimum of 70 degrees for 24 hours. This is why we try to use the heat of summer because the hotter the temperature, the less time it takes! 80 degrees means 12 hours, 90 degrees means 6 hours. Tomorrow we will have the finished skirts!

Two skirts tied loose with rubber bands. This technique is called incline dying using a rubber gutter. Since these skirts already have existing color darker dyes were used, in this instance a combination of browns. Since browns are made with multiple colors we chose ones that did not have any blues or predominant yellows. Very excited to see how this turns out! Ice will be added throughout the day until the items appear to be saturated and no more loose dye can be seen. Total process will likely take two to three days to complete. Follow along for the finished products!
