Two Queen bees for your Sunday- one a honey bee, the second, a yellow-faced bumble bee (Bombus vosnesenskii). Both gorgeous, essential, bigger than the rest, long legged and long lived

These customers had a gentle hive living undisturbed in their 2 boxes for 5 years. Every year, beekeepers would come over to collect the swarms. They just liked having the bees around. But when they decided to move them to another part of the yard, we stepped b to move them over 3 miles away for 3 weeks so they wouldn’t return to the original location. While we were at it, we revised and cleaned up the box so that the bees would have more space to grow and the queen to lay. Harvested a ton of propolis and a little honey while clearing out comb too black from propolis buildup to be of use to the bees. Looking forward to see how this hive behaves under a little more supervision🐝

Our Beekeeping Association has been recording swarm data for years and it is now clear that this year is a record low. Our swarm group chats are less business than chatty. Historically, we’re reaching the end of swarm season, but it hardly feels like it began! We’re all wondering what is going on!?!

If you have to leave an oil jug out on the counter, shouldn’t it make you joyful? And who doesn’t glean joy from a ferociousness of anglerfish? Or a pair of vampire squid? Or audacious amanita moscaria?

I emerged from my studio to find my bees swarming! I quickly grabbed a nuc and got bossy with a spritz of swarm commander which they can’t resist but somehow seem aware of the trick and kept going In and out of the box like they really were looking forward to a longer flight. The Queen went in and out 3 times before I caged her. We moved them to the new apiary in the morning. It’s really not good business practice to seed your neighbors homes with swarms from your hives!
