After a hive extraction I like to salvage beeswax from any unused honeycomb. The solar wax melter is great when it's sunny and I only have a few frames, but sometimes I need to process more. The beeswax will float to the top when it's cool and I can clean the junk off the bottom. Generally, I have to filter it about 3 times before it's clean enough for use. The beeswax to honeycomb ratio demonstrates how efficient the bees are with their materials (and also why beeswax is so expensive!)

This should be the last extraction of the year, it being October now. It was in a 100 year old cabin that needed repainting, so we had to move the bees. We crammed ourselves into the tiny pantry with a ladder to get them out of the ceiling. Ended up with a bucket of honeycomb that we shared with all the neighbors

Brandi's Repair:
We always do our extractions with our eyes towards repair whether or not we're not going to do it (though with 30 years experience in construction, Joey can do a fantastic job ). We cut the sheet rock along the studs so replacement is easy (and it's the natural boundaries of the hive). We never remove anything load bearing! After an extraction, we always scrape any wax away and paint it over to disguise the scent. Then we caulk any holes and fill the bay with insulation so that it is no longer attractive to any bees. A hive in a wall may be fun one time, but a repeat is an expensive headache.

Not every extraction is a 100% success. I noticed the queen was slow moving when I spotted her between the two studs, but her caged majesty corralled the bees into the new box. When I found her dead, we had just brought home the tiny Stump Hive, whose queen was quite lively. Giving them a mourning/acceptance time afforded by the day to chew through the newspaper dividing the two hives, makes them more likely to accept the new queen. Now both hives will be strong enough to make it through the winter, as one.

When Brandi inherited her grandparents property, she inherited a wall hive she remembers being harvested of honey for years. But remodeling plans demanded an end to the humming serenade in her bedroom and bathroom walls. The hive was 6' tall, 4' wide and 3.5" deep and full of propolis-black comb, crystallized honey and thousands of bees! The extraction took a solid 3 hours. I got stung through my suit several times. "Gracias por la Vida" - I love rescuing bees. People are usually happy to see us, curious about what the bees have built and what we're going to do with them. They tell us stories of their personal histories with bees and query us about who's who in the hive. In general, we avoid tree extractions because the bees can escape to so many unreachable places and the tree usually has to be sacrificed -or the queen does, by a one-way cone that siphons off all her companions. But this was a finite stump and we had another magical interaction with the owners. What a beautiful life we have corralling bees! Thank you for this life! Yes we're getting paid for it and it does make the stings hurt less.

Taken aback by the oddity of an October swarm, we neglected to make a plan before we captured the Bees. At least we could've held the swarm chalice underneath the Bees when we cut the branch. We just thought it would be more gentle to cut them down. Turns out they were only lightly attached. Always learning something! The owner only got one sting. We have a queen that will need a lot of feeding to make it through the winter, or she'll join a queenless hive.
