She interviewed Run-D.M.C., Wu-Tang Clan and dozens of other legends for Japanese audiences who had never seen this culture up close.

The New York Times Magazine and The Source both wrote about her. She was a pioneer nobody in America was talking about.

Mami Shirakawa left Tokyo for New York with one mission, bring American hip hop to Japan (1990).

She became the U.S. editor for WARP Japan magazine and hosted BET's Rap City Nihon, making her the first Asian and first woman to host on the network.

Decades later, the connections she built in those New York studios never faded.
