Today would have been my Mom’s 50th birthday. These last 2 years without her have changed me in ways I would’ve never wished and forced me to grow in ways I could’ve never imagined. For much of her life my mother faced the hardships of addiction which means the grieving process for me started long before June 2024.
Over 6 years ago I began writing a song, it was a simple melody with simple lyrics - and I used songwriting as a tool to help myself deal with some of those conflicting emotions of love and grief. I performed a version of this song at her funeral just two summers ago. And this year I finally felt ready to do work and tackle these big feelings to finish writing the song. Today, on her 50th birthday, I finally recorded “Remember” as a way to celebrate her and heal myself.
The most important art you make is the art you make for yourself. And if you’re really lucky, you just may get the opportunity to share that art with other people - and hope that they are impacted by it in some way. There’s still some work to be done, but I can’t wait to share “Remember” with you all soon. For now here’s a small clip from the band rehearsal today.
