Zanbeel Art is a South Asian cultural resource for Visual Art, Literature, Film and Music. Apart from providing exposure for established and emerging South Asian artists, Zanbeel Art vision is to enrich and inspire students in low socio economic schools in United States and South Asia, through a variety of art related educational outreach programs. These programs not only bridge cultural boundarie
s by sharing commonalities and embracing differences but also provide young minds opportunity to express themselves in a peaceful manner. TRANSFORMING YOUTH:
South Asian Art and Literacy for Youth program sponsored by Zanbeel Art originated from the need to provide art programs in schools that were affected by the statewide budget cuts. Established in 2011, South Asian Art and Literacy for Youth made its debut with its pilot at 112th street Elementary School in Watts, Los Angeles. Each week handpicked accomplished artists were recruited to teach art classes to the 5th grade on topics including portraits, sculpture, calligraphy, photography, endangered species in South Asia, and herb planting. The purpose of these classes is to trigger a nine-week intellectual transformation of the students by expanding their understanding of South Asian people, culture and regions hence encouraging them to become citizens of the world. Activities are focused on developing skills needed to live and work effectively in culturally and politically diverse societies. Students who participate in the South Asian Art and Literacy for Youth program have seen a significant growth in their test scores, confidence, and understanding of the South Asian regions. For this year's program Zanbeel Art has partnered with the Citizens Archive of Pakistan, founded by filmmaker and journalist Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy (Saving Face, Children of the Taliban), to implement a creative exchange using letters, collages, and videos between 5th Graders in Los Angeles, California with their counterparts in Karachi, Pakistan. The South Asian Art and Literacy for Youth is bridges between Americans and South Asians through art educational experiences. The program is an outcome of two years of collaboration between Zanbeel Art and Cheryl Trujillo, a retired Faculty College of Education, California State University Dominguez Hills.
