My top selling items are flannel shirts, vinyl records, antique bottles mineral specimens, and so many random things - I dig the Goodwill bins so you don't have to. I will tell you this when you step through the door, but let’s make it clear here as well. All of the insulting, snarky signs you see at other retail outlets do not apply here. If something breaks, that will just be my opportunity to show you how little I care. I run the shop first and foremost as a public service, and I have enough faith in capitalism to trust that respect and friendship are profitable. Then, there is this. While I do not call myself a Christian, I believe Jesus pointed the way out for humanity. So, All Are Welcome Here, with a clear and vehement exception of those who openly and proudly believe their skin color or their enthusiastic support for official cruelty makes them somehow better than those who do not have these twisted ideals. America is under attack from within, by a congenital weakness for white supremacy. My work on behalf of America and humankind is more important than my work as a retailer, and I firmly believe in the common good. I regard peace, love and understanding as normal, natural and healthy. Now that it’s established that I respect you, and love the democratic, American form of government, here’s what I have to offer. I sell primarily used goods, with a distinct preference for old, American made things or other items of quality. My pricing for these “antiques” is roughly on par with what Walmart will charge you for the plastic version. In 2017, I sold 800 flannel shirts. As someone who can take a hint, I brought 2,000 flannel shirts in 2018. I also have work pants, Sorel boots, Uggs, wool blankets, and other such items. I now have at least 8,000 vinyl records in stock: Beatles, Zeppelin, Cream, Commander Cody, Asleep at the Wheel, George Jones, War, Rufus, Jack Teagarden, Dylan, Perez Prado, Sunny and the Sunliners, Dan Hicks, Louis Prima, yup, got it - and much more. The inventory is a distillation of thousands of garage sales, and as such it has wide variety, almost none of which is donated (though if you don’t want your Zeppelin records, I won’t turn them down). Every car that stops is a collection of individuals, and I aim to have sufficient variety that no one person will be tugging at the others to leave. Red Mountain Trading Post was founded in 1951, by Hal and Liane Hall, on land no one else wanted. Hal’s family had been on this continent well before there was a United States. Liane was an immigrant and war bride. Growing the business from scratch, they had at one time a motel, diner, gas station and the Trading Post, which they operated as a rock and gift shop. Liane continued to run the shop for 60 years before handing it off to me, her youngest son, Ron. You do not need to buy anything or even set foot in the shop to use the restroom. I will take your credit card for any amount. I will steer you to the best trails, best places to eat, best values in general with your good time being the top priority.

When I was a major gifts fundraising researcher, I really enjoyed getting my search technique down to where I was catching certain things while screening out as much of what I didn't want as possible.

Now, I buy and resell merchandise, including vinyl records. After a serious deep-cleaning and grading process, I set about using eBay to determine my ask price. In a pinch, I'll go to discogs, but they just don't provide the same sort of actionable data as does eBay.

I thought there might be some other search/linguistics/boolean/vinyl geeks out there who might be amused by my process.

So, first of all, I'm buying and selling 33 RPM LPs. I steer clear of EPs (extended play singles) because they are not convenient for my customer base. But there are all sorts of things in the "records" listings that are 45s or 78s or juke box strips - these muck up my search. So, here is something I include in all searches, unless one of the following terms actually does describe what I have and am trying to price.

These terms all start with a minus sign because I don't want certain things to pop up in my search: -ep -cassette -badge -decal -slipmat -poster -keychain -import -sealed -mono -sticker -decal -uk -japan -180 -reissue

I could explain any of them if needed.

The second thing is that most people who consult eBay are looking at the wrong information, that being what people want to sell their stuff for. What is far more important is what those items *sold* for. By going to the left side of the eBay computer screen, and scrolling down almost to the end of the check-box options, you will see a check box for "sold". This lists the items fitting your description that have sold (I believe in the past 6 months, though I think they may have changed that window at least once in the past).

The "offered" listings are still of interest, because eBay gives you a count of how many items are offered (or were sold). I get a "desirability factor" by dividing the number of records sold by the number of records offered. This almost always results in a number less than 1 (one).

For example, let's say I just did the search "j j cale naturally -ep -cassette -badge -decal -slipmat -poster -keychain -import -sealed -mono -sticker -decal -uk -japan -180 -reissue". When I divide the number sold (67) by the number offered (68) I get the fraction .979167 (a very popular record). Similarly, if I do a similar search for Nugent Cat Scratch Fever, I get 418 offered and 82 sold, yielding the fraction .196172 (a far less desirable record). Yes, I'm picking on Ted Nugent, and I love J J Cale, and the market agrees.

Now, let's keep these fraction/desirability numbers in mind and turn to the condition of the record.

For simplicity, let's say 100 records are offered, and 100 are sold, and thus the desirability number is 1. If the record is sealed, or has obviously never been played in a way that left it anything but perfect condition. This record gets a 100% condition rating. If the record is in what I call "good" condition, it gets a 50% rating. Very good condition is 75%. Fair condition is another matter, because nobody who bought that record on eBay would be pleased, so "fair" gets a condition rating of only 10%.

Now, remember the desirability numbers? Well, we now have two numbers to work with. Using J J Cale as my example, and assuming that record turned out to be in very good condition, we would multiply the desirability of .979167 times the .75 condition rating and I get 30.68

Note that my condition ratings are intuitive, and have nothing to do with the Goldmine system of grading records (which I find to be misleading gibberish).

Meanwhile, I've sorted the "sold" listings by lowest price, ascending. What "30.68" is telling me is to count up from the bottom of the sold listings to the 30th or 31st record, and the price of that record will likely be what I'll charge (after adjustments). In this case, $42.

Now, that's what it might sell for on eBay, but I will adjust prices up and down accounting for two things: I don't pay near that much for the albums I acquire; I sell my albums in a retail environment in rural Colorado. In this case, I'm more than happy to get $32 for Naturally in VG condition.

There are other records that show up on eBay with high sales prices that feel artificial. I'm not offering a Kiss record for $85, and I steer clear of punk and metal records entirely (unless I happen across a bargain).

Similarly, bluegrass records are not in very much demand in eBay, but my shop is down by Telluride, so I can get premium prices there. A VG copy of John Hartford's Aereo Plain album will command around $100. That, of course was not a good example, because, well, just look up Aereo Plain in eBay. "Everybody" wants that record, and "nobody" wants to sell their copy.

Now, I just took an hour off of my pricing, and I have another 500 records to go before the end of the month. I just got an urge to share.

It's been an interesting few days, not the least of which I got a call from the bottle club VP, who winters in Florida. Another long-time, and very serious bottle collector left for Florida a number of years back, and has now decided to sell the house in South Saint Paul. He told Steve, the VP, that the realtor is cleaning out the house, and if someone hurries, there are still a lot of bottles in the garage and shed.

I hurried, cancelling my usual Thursday rounds to go round up approximately 25 boxes, which was all I could fit in the back of my 3/4s of the way full van. I dropped a dozen boxes off at the warehouse and put the rest on the balcony of our condo.

I got through them yesterday and today, separating them in to bottles with Minnesota on them (which I'll sell here the upcoming April bottle show), other bottles - the best - that will come to Ouray, and then the ones I don't have time to process. I'll give those last ones to the Goodwill Bins.

There are SO many embossed and ACL milk bottles, some nice color, and a few real gems he must have forgotten to cherry pick out when he was moving. There were also about 120 advertising beer bottle openers, and lots of cardboard milk plugs (which are a collectible item in their own right).

The realtor showed me an office file cabinet that he said was full of tokens, for bars, str**t cars and such. As soon as they'd noticed what it was, someone bumped the lock. They had no key. I made it very clear to him that he MUST NOT send that cabinet to the scrap yard. He understands, and will keep it somewhere until he finds a way to cut his way in.

I haven't gone through the boxes at the warehouse yet, but wow, this is one of those once every five years things. I'll show you some of them next summer.

I've been thinking of lowering my prices again this year.

In years past, I've paid all the sales tax. Then if someone gets 3 or more items there's an additional 10% off. Since before the pandemic, I've been lowering prices on shirts to include a lot of $10 to $13 offerings.

One problem I've had is my prices are low enough that another retailer can come in and cherry-pick through my inventory. My prices are what they are so that everyone can get the good stuff at a reasonable price. I had to discourage one merchant who had bought literally $5,000 in records one June, decimating my selection. It was nice to have that big sale, but my reputation for great selection slipped that year. I feel bad about having to tell him to reduce his purchases, but I suspect he found out there wasn't that much room for markup after he paid my price, discount or not.

Anyway, here's what I'm thinking about for 2026. Paying all of the 10% sales tax has been hard. It's close to half my margin of profit. So, going forward I'm thinking of charging 5% tax, and telling folks "I'll match it." Then there would still be the 10% off for 3 items or more.

What I missed last year were the medium-range sales, where someone would come in with an armload of flannels, and end up paying around $80 to $100. I blame the decline in that enthusiasm on the horrible economy, so I need to sweeten the deal. There will be a new 20% discount on sales of $50 or more. However, if a sale exceeds $500, the discount goes back down to 10%. This keeps the incentive for my regular buyers, without turning me into a wholesaler with only leftovers for the retail customer.

So, the real change is adding a 20% discount in the $50 - $500 range.

I'm also carrying a lot of ordinary things, like bandaids, corkscrews, and string/rope at little or no cost. No one needs to pay retail for these kinds of things when I'm in business.

Finally, I'm thinking of adding a slot where people can contribute to my mission to make travel and working in the travel industry more affordable. There are lots of things I sell where I'm making no profit, but I think they should not cost much. Those who feel they didn't pay enough - or maybe they're just comfortable enough to pitch in - those folks can drop whatever they want into the slot.
