The Ossining Documentary & Discussion Series

The Ossining Documentary & Discussion Series Bringing Our Community Together, One Film at a Time. We'd love to hear about what you want to discuss! Always at Ossining Public Library's Budarz Theater

It is our mission to bring our community together to watch, enjoy and engage in conversations about documentaries. We strive to choose documentaries which can open our eyes collectively to issues that are important to our lives in Ossining. At these free screenings we will have a panel of experts available to answer questions and facilitate our discussion. We hope that the issues raised in the doc

umentary will encourage the viewers to ask questions and seek out ways to make a difference in Ossining and in The World.

One of the central premises of marketing is that buying things will make us happy. There is a growing body of evidence, however, that the opposite is true: that the pressure to spend and consume actually makes people less happy.

Come and get HAPPY with the The Ossining Documentary & Discussion Series on December 8th!

ABOUT THIS COMING SUNDAY EVENING's Documentary Screening of 'Windshipped'...

We hope you'll join us when doors open at 5:30p to mingle with your friends, speakers or even perfect strangers! Then at 6:30p, the program will kick off with these two guys, Matt Curtin and Eric Gearity, co-proprietors of Sing Sing Kill Brewery, and our co-hosts for the night.

A little about Eric and Matt and Sing Sing Kill Brewery:
It was 1993 when Matt Curtin began homebrewing his own libations. Decades later he and Eric Gearity, professional film rigging grip, teamed up and founded Sing Sing Kill Brewery in May of 2018. They are both long-time Ossining residents.

Sing Sing Kill Brewery is committed to sourcing ingredients locally and dedicated to a practice of sustainability. Every aspect of their operations is focused on environmentally conscious practices, including the use of 100% NY-sourced renewable energy to turn locally farmed grains and hops into delicious craft beer. Sing Sing Kill was honored to have been one of the first recipients of the Green Ossining Sustainability Partnership Award.

Joining us as speakers at the Ossining Documentary & Discussion Series Screening of 'Windshipped' on 9/25 will be Dennis and Jeanette Nesel!

Dennis and Jeanette are husband and wife proprietors of Hudson Valley Malt in Germantown NY.

It is their belief that : "to make a true Hudson Valley Beer or whiskey, you have to start by using local ingredients. Near the banks of the mighty Hudson River, for the first time in over 100 years the ingredients for these beers and whiskies are being grown here, malted here, brewed or distilled here and enjoyed here. That’s great stuff and we’re very excited to be part of the movement to keep things local and fresh."

We're excited to hear about their experience as malters and as customers of Schooner Apollonia.

We welcome back our first speaker to the Sunday, September 25th Ossining Documentary & Discussion Series Screening of Windshipped!

Bowermaster's films have been a favorite of ours as they speak to one of our group's core mission in highlighting local environmental stories of hope and risks within the Hudson Valley and often focus specifically on events affecting our beloved Hudson River.

An artful storyteller, Jon's new film "Windshipped," documents the romantic return of sail-freight to the Hudson in this time of heightened awareness of the need to reduce carbon emissions.

In addition to environmental filmmaking, Jon is a writer, activist, adventurer, and a six-time grantee of the National Geographic Expeditions Council.
One of the Society’s ‘Ocean Heroes,’ his first assignment for National Geographic Magazine was documenting a 3,741 mile crossing of Antarctica by dogsled.

Jon has written eleven books and produced/directed more than thirty documentary films.

His feature documentaries include the 2022 release of 'Dear President Biden' (see trailer here: https://youtu.be/fMsiyG7vQKU),'Dear President Obama,’ ‘Antarctica, on the Edge,’ ‘After the Spill’ and ‘Ghost Fleet.’ (oceans8films.com).

His National Geographic-sponsored Oceans 8 project took him and his teams around the world by sea kayak over the course of ten years (1999-2008), bringing back stories from the Aleutian Islands to French Polynesia, Gabon to Tasmania, and more, reporting on how the planet’s one ocean and its various coastlines are faring in today’s busy world.

He is the President of the One Ocean Media Foundation, Chairman of the Advisory Board of Adventure Science and Creative Affiliate of The Safina Center.

For the past several years, Jon and his One Ocean Media Foundation / Oceans 8 Films team have focused on a series of short films about the environmental risks to, and hopes for the Hudson River Valley, the birthplace of the American environmental movement. (hudsonriverstories.com)

Jon is a Visiting Lecturer at Bard College, in the Environment and Urban Studies Department; tune into his weekly radio show/podcast, ‘The Green Radio Hour with Jon Bowermaster,’ at radiokingston.org.

We look forward to Jon's return to Ossining!

We're excited to be back for this very special event after a longggg hiatus!

Jon Bowermaster's latest Hudson River story,"Windshipped," documents how the Schooner Apollonia has brought old-fashioned fossil-free sail freight back to the Hudson River.

Built in 1946 and revived for re-launch in 2020, the Apollonia and its new crew travel from Hudson to Kingston, Beacon, Newburgh, Poughkeepsie, Piermont and Ossining, its hold stuffed with Upstate goods headed south – and products made in The City returning back north.

Follow the Apollonia as it picks up and delivers goods to Hudson River ports and directly to its customers -- a carbon-free story using wind, sun and pedal-power!

Before and after the film you'll have the opportunity to hear from Sam Merrett and the rest of the Schooner Apollonia crew (including Brad Vogel, James Ferrell, Matt Soltesz, and Tanya Van Renesse), Jon Bowermaster, Jeanette and Dennis Nesel of Hudson Valley Malt, as well as Matt Curtin and Eric Gearity of Sing Sing Kill Brewery.

Join us for this special event! Doors open at 5:30p and the program/screening begins at 6:30p. A Q&A will follow.

Seven years ago this summer, a group of Ossining volunteers co-founded this series. There were two docs that inspired Victoria Gearity to begin this series. One of them was Brother Outsider: the Life of Bayard Rustin.

Rustin was one of the key organizers of the March on Washington. Rustin was a gay black man at the forefront of civil rights. Thanks to his Quaker roots, he was instrumental in helping MLK to truly live the values of nonviolence. Rustin’s partner was one of the panelists at the 8/29/13 ODDS screening, along with Ossining’s own Dennis Parker.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington, our community hosted events on back-to-back nights. On 8/28/13, we held a program where local residents spoke about the past, present and future of the civil rights movement. Below is a link to a blog Victoria wrote at the time.

This link includes a recap of the ODDS screening as well as a video of highlights from the program that took place on the 50th anniversary of the March.

For those of you who joined us for our Deconstructing Racism series about a year back, you may recognize a couple of these speakers that have been working in the Ossining Union Free School District for years educating our children about racism, Jillian McRae and Sam North.

Community leader Knowles continues to inspire us all and we hope you join us at the Ossining Waterfront this evening at 5p to hear from them all.
