PART ONE ⛪❤️
Interior Views & History of St. John's Gernant's Church
“Set on a hill that cannot be hid.” 🫂🗣️🙌🪦
Perched above the countryside near Leesport, Pennsylvania, St. John's Gernant's Church has stood as a place of worship, community, and history for well over 200 years!
The congregation traces its beginnings back to 1794, when German settlers established a small log cabin church and shared burial ground on land purchased from John Gernant — whose name and remains attached to the church today. The original structure was modest in size, yet somehow held hundreds of worshippers gathered together beneath its galleries and pipe organ.
As the congregation grew, a new church was planned in the late 1860s. Believe it or not, there was even heated debate over WHERE the church should stand.
One local farmer reportedly declared: 🗣️
“If you build the church in the mud hole, I will not give a cent. But if you build it on the hill, I will give $500.”🙌🪦
Thankfully… the hill won. ❤️
The current sanctuary was rebuilt in 1868, though the upper church interior was not fully completed until 1886 due to financial hardship. Through debt, disagreements, rebuilding efforts, and generations of change, the congregation continued forward — preserving not only a church, but an entire piece of Pennsylvania history. 🫂❤️
One of the most breathtaking features inside the sanctuary is its memorial stained glass windows. Installed during the early 20th century and dedicated in 1942, the ten sanctuary windows depict the life of Christ from birth through resurrection. Other windows honor figures of the Reformation, saints, martyrs, and important Biblical figures from both the Old and New Testaments.
Each window was hand-painted, assembled with leaded glass, and dedicated by members of the community whose names remain memorialized within the artwork itself. Remarkably, the identity of the original stained glass artist has been lost to time — but their work continues to fill the sanctuary with color and light nearly a century later. 🌈✨
From its 3,000-pound bell that still echoes across the countryside… to the generations of pastors, families, and worshippers who helped preserve this church through the years… St. John’s Gernant’s Church is far more than a historic building.
It is a living story. 🫂❤️
