CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:
Charlie “The Tuna” Scarpelli – Male, late 40’s to early 50’s
Charlie is the classic 1920’s gangster. He runs the NYC nightclub called The 38. He’s tough and rarely hears “no” for an answer. He once had a prolonged fling with Rose (as he does with ALL his headliners). But now, he is pursuing Carmen Colada. Charlie sings one standard “crooner” number in the show. Performers who do not sing will also be considered for this role.
Mr. Cain – Male, mid 40’s
Mr. Cain is Charlie’s henchman. He is Charlie’s confidant and knows almost all of Charlie’s inside secrets. He is in love with Rose. Almost everyone treats Mr. Cain with respect. Mr. Cain does not sing.
Lawrence “Larry” Lombardo – Male, 30’s to 40’s
Larry Lombardo is the wisecracking bandleader. He is in debt to Charlie which explains his employment at The 38. He’s lighthearted, yet disgruntled. He once knew how to lead an orchestra, but now he is less than enthusiastic about his current gig. Larry does not sing in this show.
Tommy Merengue – Male, mid to late 20’s
Tommy is the emcee at The 38. He is in love with Carmen. He owes Charlie his life. Above all, it is Tommy’s job to keep the show going. Tommy sings one “crooner” standard.
Rose Meadowlark – Female, late 30’s
Rose, at one point, was the toast of the town. She is now a washed up has-been. She has a good voice but these days she’s damaged goods. Rose is still in love with Charlie and yearns for the days of yesteryear. Rose sings one number plus a duet in the show.
Carmen Colada – Female, early to mid 20’s
Carmen is the sweet ingénue and this is her first day at The 38. She will soon be the headliner at The 38 and everyone (except her) knows it. She is a little flaky and is in love with Tommy. Carmen sings one number in the show.
Mama Scarpelli – Male or Female, mid to late 60’s
Mamma is the quintessential Italian Mother. She is sweet yet tough. She is Charlie’s mother and owns The 38. Her ownership is her trump card and she knows how to use it. Mama does not sing in this show.
The Speakeasy Murder & Other Acts of Prohibition is a light-hearted, family friendly, comedy whodunnit with music. The producers are committed to providing a professional, safe, and comfortable working environment and expect the same from the performers.
