Yowza! I’m very happily surprised to find that I’m nominated in the category for Best Visual Artist in one of my favorite publications, Orlando Weekly’s annual rundown of The City Beautiful’s list of superlatives. I’ve campaigned in the past for my favorite businesses, like Gods & Monsters (in the category of Best Comic Shop), their speakeasy Vault 5421 (Best I-Drive Bar) and the amazing Zymarium Meadery (Best Mills 50 Bar) — past winners all. Comic Art Live 13 goes live tomorrow! I’ll be featuring several hand sculpted, one-of-a-kind statues, and also have some open commission slots if you have a special piece in mind (check out some examples here).
In addition to all the great art on sale, there will be virtual panels all weekend, including a show on 3PM Sunday to talk about the amazing IC3 + First Coast Comicon coming to Jacksonville, July, 11. The King gets his day— and his street! An incredible moment as New York recognizes one of its finest for all time by permanently renaming the corner of Essex and Delancey, Jack Kirby Way. Under slightly overcast skies a crowd of fans enjoyed moving tributes from Jack’s grandkids who are carrying on his legacy, comics industry vets who continue to toil in the medium that we all adore—though it will break your heart, as Jack himself would say— and the incredible who championed this cause, teaming with local City Council Member, Chris Marte who grew up in Jack’s old neighborhood and serves for the first district, to make this dream a reality. From a humble tenement apartment in Manhattan’s lower east side, a hardworking, artistic savant dared to dream big and created entire universes of characters, places and stories to fill them for us to enjoy, and dream right alongside him… thank you, Jack, for lighting the way artistically as well as with your humanity and kindness.

Starting a new commission and wanted to take you behind the scenes, starting with a quick peek at the simplest sketch of the armature that forms the skeleton of the sculpture and the wire I’ve twisted into the shape I’ll build upon. I’m still processing everything that made the extraordinary—and for me, on multiple occasions—the out of body experience it was. The incredible vision of to articulate an emphatically unique concept for the relaunched Kirby Awards moved through all attendees, collectors, artists and dealers alike, like a shared fever dream. Collaborating with Kasra on the design of the award and having the pleasure of sculpting it to bring his powerful design to three-dimensional life goes beyond “bucket list” in my “life’s moments of euphoria” recap… sharing the piece, as well as the unique version we prepared for Tracy and Jeremy Kirby, only made my soul finally leave my body like a fever dream. There are a dozen more moving and moving recollections I could share, but I wouldn’t do them—or the people involved—justice, be they vibrant up-and-comers from Ringling or comics royalty who radiate beauty and humanity from within. OAX is a place for all lovers of the narrative arts to gather to celebrate their fascination and let it move them and through them, like that fever dream I mentioned. That out of body experience you always end up having at some point at OAX. Hope to see you there next year.
