We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Kevin and Dawn Anderson for their incredibly generous $1,000 donation to the Oakland-Craig Inclusive Playground!

Kevin and Dawn are true pillars of Oakland and Craig, and their impact can be seen in countless ways throughout the area. As lifelong residents, Oakland-Craig graduates, and proud parents and grandparents, they have dedicated many years to enriching the place they call home and creating opportunities for future generations.

Their commitment to service has touched nearly every corner of local life. Through leadership roles on numerous boards and organizations, including Kevin’s years of service on the Oakland-Craig School Board, they have consistently worked to strengthen opportunities for students, families, and neighbors alike.

Dawn devoted her career to elementary education at Oakland-Craig, where she celebrated, encouraged, and believed in every child who walked through her classroom doors. Her passion for helping students learn, grow, and feel valued left a lasting impact on countless children and families. She understood that every child deserves to feel seen, supported, and included - a belief that aligns beautifully with the mission of this inclusive playground.

Together, Kevin and Dawn exemplify what it means to invest in others. Their lives reflect a deep-rooted commitment to service, a genuine love for Oakland-Craig, and a desire to help those around them succeed and thrive.

The spirit they bring to everything they do mirrors the vision behind the Oakland-Craig Inclusive Playground - a place where every child belongs, every child is valued, and every child has the opportunity to play, explore, and build meaningful connections regardless of ability.

The Oakland-Craig Inclusive Playground Committee is incredibly honored and grateful to the Donald E. Nielsen Foundation for its remarkable $75,000 grant award in support of the Oakland-Craig Inclusive Playground Project.

This generous investment is far more than a contribution to a playground—it is an investment in our community, our families, and our future.

For years, the Donald E. Nielsen Foundation has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to rural Nebraska and the communities that make our state such a special place to call home. Time and time again, the foundation has stepped forward to support visionary projects and initiatives that improve quality of life, create opportunities, and ensure that small-town America not only survives but thrives.

Across our region, the foundation’s impact can be seen in projects that enhance recreation, beautify public spaces, strengthen schools, support nonprofit organizations, and create unique opportunities for people of all ages. Their generosity has helped communities dream bigger, accomplish more, and preserve the values and experiences that make rural living so meaningful.

What makes the Donald E. Nielsen Foundation especially remarkable is its consistent belief that every community—regardless of size—deserves access to quality amenities, meaningful opportunities, and spaces that bring people together. Their support has empowered organizations and school districts to expand horizons for students, foster community pride, and create destinations that improve the lives of residents while making our towns attractive places to live, work, raise families, and visit.

The Oakland-Craig Inclusive Playground embodies many of those same values.

This project will create a place where children of all abilities can play side by side, where barriers are removed, and where inclusion is more than a concept—it is experienced every day. It will be a gathering space for families, grandparents, grandchildren, neighbors, visitors, and future generations. It will encourage recreation, friendship, exploration, and community connection while providing opportunities that many children have never had access to before.

The Donald E. Nielsen Foundation’s investment in this project demonstrates a profound understanding that communities are strengthened when everyone has a place to belong.

Thank you to the Donald E. Nielsen Foundation for believing in our vision and helping turn it into a reality.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to an anonymous donor for their generous $100 donation to the Oakland-Craig Inclusive Playground in memory of Tammy Case and Harper Case.

We are truly honored to recognize the legacy of Tammy Case and her granddaughter, Harper Case—lives we are so easily able to celebrate because of the wonderful person Tammy was and the incredible family both Tammy and Harper were blessed to share, right here in the Oakland community.

Tammy’s life was rooted in love—for her family, her husband Gary, and the community she called home. She was someone who showed up for others, who valued connection, and who took pride in creating a life centered around family, kindness, and togetherness. Those same values are at the very heart of the Oakland-Craig Inclusive Playground—bringing people together, creating space for joy, and ensuring everyone feels welcome and included.

A gift in Harper’s name carries an especially meaningful impact. It helps bring to life a playground in her own community—a place where her sisters, family, and friends can gather, laugh, and create lasting memories. It becomes a space where her sweet spirit can be remembered in the most beautiful way—through play, connection, and the love that continues to shape those who knew her.

This thoughtful memorial reminds us that legacies live on not only in memory, but in the spaces we build, the joy we share, and the lives we continue to touch.

Thank you to this generous donor for helping honor Tammy and Harper in such a meaningful and lasting way.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Sandra Johnson for her $20 donation to the Oakland Craig Inclusive Playground in memory of Steve Hanna.

Steve was a passionate educator and coach for 33 years, but his greatest lessons reached far beyond the walls of a classroom or school building. He had a rare gift for making everyone feel like they were his favorite person, generously sharing his time, talents, and kindness with family, friends, students, and even strangers. He poured himself into everything he did and believed deeply in investing in people and community.

It seems especially fitting that a memorial gift honoring Steve’s life would support an inclusive playground.

This playground will be more than a place to play. It will be a place where every child feels welcomed, valued, and included—a place where friendships are formed, imaginations grow, and memories are made. Just as Steve’s influence extended far beyond his classroom, the impact of this playground will extend far beyond its equipment, touching the lives of children and families for generations to come.

Sandra, thank you for honoring the legacy of a dear friend and community member so many of us knew and loved. We can think of no more fitting tribute than helping create a space where every child belongs and every child has the opportunity to experience the joy of play together.

The Oakland-Craig Inclusive Playground Committee is proud to recognize and thank Duane and Betty Starr and the Normil Foundation for their generous $5,000 donation in support of the Oakland-Craig Inclusive Playground project.

The Normil Foundation was established in honor of Betty’s parents, NORman and MILdred Heitshusen, combining their first names to create the foundation’s name. After Mildred’s passing, she entrusted Betty with managing the foundation and carrying forward its mission. A proud member of the Oakland High School Class of 1933, Mildred believed strongly in supporting her hometown and ensuring resources were invested in projects that promote growth, revitalization, and community progress. Her vision continues to live on through the work of the Normil Foundation today.

Betty’s commitment to the Oakland area is deeply personal. Having grown up halfway between Lyons and Oakland, she has maintained a lifelong connection to this community and shares her mother’s passion for helping it thrive.

Duane, Betty and their family have been longstanding and generous supporters of the Oakland community, and their continued dedication to causes that improve the lives of others is truly inspiring. Their generosity helps bring meaningful projects like this to life and strengthens the community they care so deeply about.

Because of the Normil Foundation’s support, we are one step closer to creating a playground where children of all abilities can play, connect, and thrive together. The Oakland-Craig Inclusive Playground will be a place where every child feels welcome, included, and valued—a lasting gift to generations of families in our community.

Thank you, Duane, Betty, and the Normil Foundation for making a lasting impact and for all the ways you continue to uplift the communities you touch. Your generosity and dedication are helping turn this vision into reality, and we are incredibly grateful for your support!

The Oakland-Craig Inclusive Playground Committee extends its heartfelt gratitude to members of the Oakland-Craig Class of 1958—Tom Wallerstedt, Roger Johnson, Karen Rosenboom, Sandra Johnson, and Patty Miller—for their generous combined donation of $600 toward the Oakland-Craig Inclusive Playground.

Though nearly seven decades have passed since they walked the halls of Oakland-Craig, the Class of 1958 continues to demonstrate what it means to be invested in the future of a community. Their gift reflects a deep understanding that strong communities are built when people remain committed to making life better for generations that follow.

By supporting an inclusive playground, they are helping break down barriers and create opportunities for recreation, interaction, socialization, and play that can be enjoyed by people of all abilities and all ages. This project will provide a place where grandparents and grandchildren alike can share in the excitement, laughter, and connection that play brings, creating memories that span generations.

The steadfast support that the Class of 1958—and these individuals in particular—have shown for both our community and their alma mater is admired and respected. Their generosity serves as a wonderful example of community pride, lifelong commitment, and the lasting impact that caring individuals can have on the place they call home.

Thank you, Tom, Roger, Karen, Sandra, and Patty, for helping make the Oakland-Craig Inclusive Playground a reality and for continuing to strengthen the community you have supported for so many years.

The Oakland-Craig Inclusive Playground Committee would like to extend our deepest gratitude to all those who have contributed to the Heidi Holm Memorial. Through the generosity of family members, friends, colleagues, and community supporters, a $1,000 donation has been made to the Inclusive Playground Project in Heidi’s honor.

Memorial gifts are always meaningful because they reflect the lasting impact one person has had on the lives of others. The outpouring of support through the Heidi Holm Memorial speaks to the remarkable legacy Heidi leaves behind and the countless people whose lives she touched.

Those who knew Heidi witnessed her determination, resilience, and grace. They saw her overcome obstacles, pursue her calling with unwavering purpose, and devote herself to improving the lives of others. Heidi led not through recognition or attention, but through compassion, service, and a genuine belief in the worth and potential of every person she encountered.

For those fortunate enough to know her, it was clear that helping others wasn’t simply what Heidi did—it was who she was. Whether advocating for inclusion, supporting individuals and families, or helping people achieve goals others thought impossible, Heidi lived a life centered on opening doors and creating opportunities for others.

What better way to honor that legacy than through a project that seeks to ensure every child has a place to play, belong, and be included?

This memorial contribution is more than a donation. It is a reflection of the love, admiration, and respect shared by so many whose lives were enriched by Heidi’s presence. Through these gifts, Heidi’s influence will continue to create opportunities for connection, joy, and inclusion for generations of children and families.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the Heidi Holm Memorial and to those helping ensure that Heidi’s legacy of service, perseverance, compassion, and inclusion continues to make a difference in our community.

The Oakland-Craig Inclusive Playground Committee would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Gerald and Hattie Conradson of Fort Calhoun for their generous $100 donation toward our playground project.

Gerald moved to Oakland with his twin brother when they were just 2 years old and spent his childhood here before enlisting in the Air Force after high school. Though he and Hattie later settled elsewhere, they have remained closely connected to Oakland through class reunions, community events, and family visits, often enjoying our beloved Harvest Moon pumpkin patch.

Now surrounded by a growing family of four children, 13 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren, Gerald and Hattie understand the importance of creating places where children can learn, play, and make memories together.

Gerald looks back fondly on the friendships and experiences he enjoyed growing up in Oakland. Thanks to supporters like Gerald and Hattie, future generations of children will have the same opportunity to build lasting memories and friendships through play—without barriers and with inclusion at the heart of the experience.

Thank you, Gerald and Hattie, for helping create a place where every child belongs.
