Unwrapping the Story of Chocolate
Before chocolate became the sweet treat we know today, it was sacred—woven into myth, ritual, and everyday life across Mesoamerica. My latest mural design, a composite of ancient Mayan and Mixtec imagery, brings this history to life, wrapping around a column like the ancient Maya vessels that once held cacao. At its heart, the cacao god presides over a world of discovery, preparation, and ceremony.

Cacao: A Sacred Journey
Playful monkeys—first to taste cacao—share it with the Mayan Merchant God L. He carries it as currency and gift, trading it across the ancient world, from the tropical lowlands to Oaxaca and beyond.
His court indulges in frothy atole, fresh pods, and tamales. Inspired by the Princeton Vase, the mural reveals glimpses of hidden rituals, migrations, and exchanges that shaped civilizations.
Cacao’s journey calls us to embrace other cultures, each other, and the sacred foods that connect us across time and place.

Cacao: Un Viaje Sagrado
