One year after painting the first brushstroke, the Nelly Hannon Gateway mural is complete.

I want to share my deepest gratitude to all who walked this path with me — to , to the City of Emeryville and Oakland communities, to the teams, friends, and collaborators who supported, encouraged, and stood in partnership.

Every layer of color carries the energy of collaboration and care. This mural is not just paint on walls, it’s the spirit of many hands and voices who believe in beauty, belonging, and resilience.

Thank you for trusting me with this vision, and thank you to all who lent your expertise, kindness, and love along the way. This mural is ours together.

Unwrapping the Story of Chocolate

Before chocolate became the sweet treat we know today, it was sacred—woven into myth, ritual, and everyday life across Mesoamerica. My latest mural design, a composite of ancient Mayan and Mixtec imagery, brings this history to life, wrapping around a column like the ancient Maya vessels that once held cacao. At its heart, the cacao god presides over a world of discovery, preparation, and ceremony.

Look below and swipe right to read a creative interpretation behind the piece and immerse yourself in the legacy of chocolate.

Cacao: A Sacred Journey

Playful monkeys—first to taste cacao—share it with the Mayan Merchant God L. He carries it as currency and gift, trading it across the ancient world, from the tropical lowlands to Oaxaca and beyond.

His court indulges in frothy atole, fresh pods, and tamales. Inspired by the Princeton Vase, the mural reveals glimpses of hidden rituals, migrations, and exchanges that shaped civilizations.

Cacao’s journey calls us to embrace other cultures, each other, and the sacred foods that connect us across time and place.

Cacao: Un Viaje Sagrado

🌅 A New Year; A New Day

Sunrises and sunsets weave a timeless tapestry, gently reminding us of each day’s promise—a moment to reflect, a chance to begin anew.

As I gaze upon a sunset, I find myself reflecting on the moments that shaped my day—the choices made, the paths taken, and the quiet marvel of our natural world. Each sunset is a canvas of wonder, reminding me to release my thoughts into the vast sky, where hope and vision for tomorrow take root.

This sentiment resonates deeply as my latest mural, “A New Day,” is slowly unveiled at the Nelly Hannon Gateway in Emeryville. As the scaffolding is slowly removed, the mural’s colors and forms come to life, wrapping the building in the beauty of dawn and dusk.

This project has been three years in the making, part of a larger vision by Resources for Community Development (RCD) to bring affordable housing—a much-needed sanctuary of hope and renewal—to this community. It has been an honor to contribute to a project that reflects the resilience, unity, and promise of a brighter future for so many.

While this project is still in the works, I am so grateful for the generous help of my creative collaborators on this massive project. Huge Thank you to , , & for their masterful mural skills and wise guidance. Gratitude to for technical support, painting, and helping to think this project through. A big thanks and hugs to my longtime collaborators and painting assistants Jasmine Quiroga (), Tony Coleman, and Greg Duggan(). Thanks to Eduardo Pineda .eduardo for getting me into this mural life. Gratitude for our late friend for the lifelong inspiration. Thanks Ray.

And thank you to ALL those in my life who have helped me get to this point. You know who you are.

Here’s to new days and the beauty, hope, and joy they bring.

Mural & building project completion is expected in Summer 2025.

Honoring the legendary Fernando Valenzuela, whose legacy lives on in our hearts and memories. A few years ago, I painted him as a calavera Los Angeles Dodger, a tribute to his remarkable career and to the tradition of Día de los Mu***os. Today, we remember him and all our ancestors.
