Many congratulations to our graduating Italian students especially those who were inducted into the National Italian Honor Society - Gamma Kappa Alpha, which acknowledges superior scholastic performance in the field of Italian language, literature, and culture. Watch out for the tri-colore chords adorning the gowns of our wonderful inductees at graduation 🇮🇹! We would also like to congratulate two specific graduates: Vince Calzante and Gabriela Sierocka. Vince Calzante won the Joseph Italo Bosco Award presented to a graduating senior for excellence in Italian Studies. Gabriela Sierocka was awarded the University of Notre Dame Library Research Award which recognizes undergraduate students who demonstrate excellence in utilizing Hesburgh Library for academic projects. This semester, Italian students took part in a lively poetry slam, crafting original pieces while sharpening their language skills. Voices were heard, prizes were won, and charcuterie boards were eaten. What a wonderful event, thank you to everyone who joined and made it so special! From Hesburgh Library to Newberry Library, Italian Studies students continued their work beyond the classroom on April 18, 2026.
Led by Professor Rebecca Bowen, the group explored incunables and early printed editions in terza rima alongside Dr. Nora Epstein, engaging directly with texts often overlooked in the critical tradition. Drawing on their coursework, students examined editions of Petrarch’s Trionfi, Federico Frezzi’s Quadrireggio, and Fazio degli Uberti’s Dittamondo, with close attention to page design, ownership marks, bindings, and reader interventions across centuries.
The visit offered a rare opportunity to handle and analyze the material history of texts studied in class, deepening engagement with early modern Italian literary culture and opening new avenues for research.
This experience was made possible through the support of the Center for Italian Studies and the Newberry Consortium.

In addition to the traditional language classes, the ND Italian Department offers a wide array of classes that can count not only for the Italian major/minor but also for a University literature, advanced language, or philosophy requirement. Some courses are taught in English and others in Italian—choose what fits your level. Study Italian!!

Join us for the concluding lecture of the Spring 2026 Italian Research Seminar, featuring Francesco Ciabattoni (Georgetown University), on the theatrical dimensions of Divine Comedy. This talk explores how Dante’s Commedia engages medieval traditions of dramatic dialogue, liturgical ritual, music, and dance, transforming Inferno into a dialogic stage of punishment, Purgatorio into a ritual spectacle of spiritual renewal, and Paradiso into a cosmic theatre of sound and movement. Through these performative elements, Dante renders theological and metaphysical ideas as lived, sensory experiences.
