Development of ARC Raiders was far more chaotic than players might expect. According to production director Caio Braga, the project went through years of confusion where even the team couldn’t clearly define what the game was. 🎮
⚙️ Early development struggles
• Some developers thought it was a battle royale
• Others described it as a hero looter shooter
• Some even imagined a co-op Shadow of the Colossus-style game
At one point, 120 developers were working on the project with conflicting ideas about its direction.
⚡ Internal conflicts
Different teams were often building completely different visions of the game:
• Weapon designers made guns so powerful they destroyed enemy AI too easily
• UI and UX teams disagreed on how the interface should look
• Internal playtests sometimes felt like playing entirely different games
Braga admitted that many studios would have cancelled the project at that stage.
After years of experimentation, Embark scaled the team down and focused on the strongest elements already built.
That shift eventually led ARC Raiders to become the extraction shooter players know today, turning a chaotic development cycle into one of the industry’s biggest surprises.
