Today, I celebrate the Life and Legacy of the Legendary, Big Bill Broonzy.

One of the most influential guitarists to have ever existed, Broonzy began playing blues guitar in the 1920s after moving from Arkansas to Chicago, releasing his first record – "Big Bill's Blues"/"House Rent Stomp" – in 1927 on early blues/jazz label Paramount Records.

Big Bill Broonzy passed away on August 14, 1958, in Chicago. He died from throat and lung cancer. His death occurred after a final tour in 1957 and a period of declining health.

Big Bill Broonzy performed at the Old Town School of Folk Music where I’m proud to be teaching Acoustic Guitar, on the school’s opening night on December 1, 1957. This event marked a significant moment in the school's history, with Broonzy's powerful performance of the song "The Glory of Love"
and the Old Town School’s first teacher, Frank Hamilton, transcribing for students being a highlight.

Big Bill Broonzy's guitar, played during the last decade of his life, is on display at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago.

Big Bill was 65 years old.
