To other artists who photograph their own things— how do you deal with this? These shots were taken at the same spot outside my apartment, same time, lighting, etc— just different backgrounds My iPhone at this point has better resolution than my “nice” 2008 camera so I’ve been using it for product photography, but if I put my things on a white background the auto settings dull and darken the colors and change it completely. I then have to spend time editing the photos to get the vibrancy back.
What cameras are you all using, what approaches?
My next shop update will just have brick and wood backgrounds, which I may prefer. It’s such a funny (bu****it?) idea that in order to take a “professional” photo of a thing you made by hand that will be used in other peoples hands to drink their tea and eat their soup in their kitchens then you have to photograph it on a swoop of paper without shadows so it looks like it’s floating in a void.
This piece was wheel thrown and altered, spray glazed and soda fired.

The Girl I Guess voter guide has been enormously helpful. Last day for early voting in Chicago is today, I’ll be hitting the polls tomorrow with the rest of the people who were too caught up by the trash fire our rights are burning in to plan ahead. Full link is in bio, along with their PayPal link if you are so inclined.

I felt like today was a particularly fitting time, so I went to in Chicago. I'm putting this out for those having a hard time accessing the latest . Consider this my digital palm card! Check out full coverage at girliguess.com. Vote to keep bodily autonomy on the books for everyone in Illinois, and then hit the streets to demand it stays that way.

Hey Lillstreeters— summer classes are up! Lillstreet is adopting a mask optional policy, but individual teachers can require masks in their classes. I will be doing so, as will several others. Classes requiring masks will be marked on the website starting next week. I will be teaching 5 classes this summer:

Monday eve: Advanced Wheel

Tuesday 2-5: Intermediate Wheel

Tuesday eve: Intermediate Wheel

Thursday 2-5: Beginning Wheel

Thursday eve: Intermediate Wheel

If you want to make sure to sign up for a masked class, check in with teachers via email or insta or with the front desk, as classes may be filled up by next week when classes are marked as masked/not masked on the website.

See you around!

Pulled this out of the lovely ‘s kiln this afternoon. A new experiment from a whoops-what-now situation. I cut the mishima lines too deep while the clay was too wet. As it dried and shrunk it created a tectonic plate effect that only got more dramatic with firing. I filled the cracks and shapes with a combination of glazes and am jazzed about how it turned out.

Lots of things to drink from and a few other treats for this first update! Any orders placed will start to ship out Tuesday November 30th, so no need to worry about things arriving when you’re out of town. I’ll be adding my paintings and drawings on the update. This took me a bit longer than I expected BUT I’m so happy to have jumped ship to Shopify. Please let me know about any quirks with the new site. Thanks for looking! Happy to have the things I’ve been playing with out in full view ❤️. LINK IN BIO

A curvy babe all dressed up in crimson and dots for your . This and other cups and mugs are up in my shop if you’re bored with your drink ware and want to spice things up. I throw them on the wheel then fold in the curves while still quite damp, carve to define curves and add dots with slip when leather hard, fire it then take it to the spray booth for glaze then fire it again. It’s a long and involved multi step process I’m very into. Link in bio! $72 plus shipping. Free pickup at Lillstreet if you’re in Chicago ❤️

This is how the movement in my cumulus bloom pieces evolves. When it’s barely firmed up I’ll trim the excess support clay off the bottom then start folding in curves with my finger or a wet sponge from the inside and outside. The movements are decided organically and intuitively. Later when it’s leather hard I’ll take it off the bat and I’ll carve to define the curves.
Love and peace on this Saturday.

The two vessels I made this week, waiting for a bisque fire. They both started out as class demos, then one took over my week.
When my dad asked Jim Foose, an incredible Kentucky watercolor artist, how long one of his paintings took, he said something along the lines of “40 years, 3 months and 2 hours”. Each piece you make carries a life spent making, looking at and considering your own art and the art made by other people’s hearts, energy, honed talent and the voracious need so many of us feel to make and keep making. What to do with what we’ve made and how to build a career and an income out of it all is the harder part for so many of us.
If you’re into more angles of wrinkles and folds and a few paintings by , swipe on. ❤️

This is the only bloom pot I’ve done recently in stoneware. The texture isn’t as fun (for me) to work with but I like how differently it takes the glaze. And love loving this sunny cold day.
