FIRST OPEN STUDIOS OF THE YEAR! THURSDAY JANUARY 25, 5-7 pm, Building 13 & 34! Free and open to all!

Pictured here is current AIR Alida Rodrigues, a London based visual artist. During her residency Alida has been learning to weave under the guidance of local weaver Megan Karlen.

"Starting as a beginner, I find myself gradually developing my skills while working alongside a loom, a powerful piece of machinery in itself. My journey doesn’t have a defined end goal; rather it’s focused on forming a relationship with the materials and the machine, treating each piece as an experiment rather than a final artwork. Throughout this process, I’ve engaged in an ongoing dialogue with my body, experiencing the rhythmic movements involved with the loom, yarn, and thread."

Come meet Alida and the rest of our artists-in-residence and see what they've been working on.

Lean into your creativity in 2024! Our marketing coordinator and expert photographer, Makayla-Courttney McGeeney (.media) joined Common Folk 6 years ago when she found herself lacking a creative outlet and met a whole lot of amazing new friends at a Common Folk potluck. She really appreciates the way Common Folk has surrounded her with other artists and continually reminds her to make time for her creative exploration—when the busy world can so quickly force us to put it aside. For her, our regular open mic nights also give her inspiration for her poetry. Makayla thinks that Common Folk is especially supportive for artists at the beginning stages of their practice who need a stepping stone toward evolving their creative practice. Every month she gets to meet new people.

Makayla-Courtney McGeeney is a digital marketing strategist with a degree in journalism from MCLA who specializes in helping small business owners and artists achieve success. She creates content for social media accounts, does photography and builds websites for clients while also serving as the marketing coordinator for Common Folk Artist Collective and the board chair of the Louison House homeless shelter. With a passion for small businesses, entrepreneurs, and artists, Makayla is committed to promoting their longevity and sharing their knowledge to help clients succeed in the digital age. And she’s always accepting new clients!

Isabel Twanmo () joined Common Folk in 2019, a year after she moved to North Adams, but she learned about Common Folk within 24-hours of moving. Once she joined, she’d sit in our former Main St storefront studio and draw. She says, "That time was integral to my greater immersion to the town, as I’d introduce myself to fellow members and customers. Common Folk quickly helped me acclimate while providing the resources, space, and community that ultimately lead me to fall in love with North Adams."

In her second year in town, Common Folk encouraged Isabel to start making stickers and prints of her smaller illustrations. Where she had once lacked the confidence or drive to even show her own work, with Common Folk she slowly grew her inventory of stickers and prints and now, five years later, participates in many Common Folk vending opportunities with her own table. She also serves on Common Folk’s fundraising and marketing committee.

"I’ve built a small business, I’ve found community and support through the vast web of members past and present. Common Folk, like anything, is what you make of it, but making it, whatever that may be, doesn’t happen without a little help, and some good folks.”

You can purchase Isabel’s amazing food and animal-inspired drawings in holographic sticker and print form at our Holden St storefront.

You don’t have to be a member to be involved in Common Folk! Suzy Helme () supports the collective as a monthly donor to ensure that North Adams remains vibrant, fascinating, and inviting for all. She attends events, shops at our Holden Street storefront, and loves it all.

"Even if I can't participate in everything, I love knowing it's there and existing for others to be a part of and find joy and inspiration through.” She especially loves being able to sign up to make recurring monthly donation. "The amount is small enough not to feel like stretch, but it adds up over the course of a year/years to probably be more than I would have donated as a one time donation. It makes supporting artists in our community easy."

During this holiday season, when we’re all dreaming of a little beach time, sponsor a Common Folk membership to welcome everyone into our creative community, regardless of financial means. And thanks to our fiscal sponsorship by Fractured Atlas, your donation can also be tax deductible! Give the gift of art, community, and access to local makers here in the North Berkshires. Select “Donate” from the link in our bio!

You don’t have to live in the Berkshires to be a member of Common Folk! Becky Waterhouse (), lives in western New York state and remains a Common Folk member even after leaving North Adams. Becky joined Common Folk in 2017 shortly after graduating with a degree in arts management and looking to put her degree to immediate work. In fact, it’s thanks to Becky that Common Folk has a membership program at all! As she shifted more into art-making, Becky relied on the Common Folk shared studio equipment and Adobe suite, materials and tools she couldn’t have afforded otherwise. “It was the testing ground for everything,” she says.

Since leaving North Adams, Becky still sells work in the Holden St storefront, but she really relies on Common Folk for its community, something she’s still building in her new home. “While there are lots of other collectives in different cities, Common Folk is so special in how accessible it is, easy to get into. [It] doesn’t exist elsewhere, and I learned that after I left.”

Becky Waterhouse is an illustrator, muralist, community organizer and now a tattoo artist. “I love playing a role in the sacred relationship we have with our bodies and the spaces we share: by centering care and accessibility, my hope is to foster a sense of personal empowerment and collective belonging with each tattoo.”

Do you know who created our Moon Man mascot? Meet Katherine Haig (), Common Folk’s co-lead of our exhibitions team. Since she joined in 2015, Katie has held many hats, including coordinating our first storefront studio on Main Street, and spearheading several community fundraising efforts, including for Arts in Recovery for Youth to raise awareness for su***de prevention.

At Common Folk she’s learned marketing and how to mount a show. With the skills she’s gained as part of Common Folk’s leadership team, Katie has stepped into many different community leadership roles around our community.

With the support of fellow Common Folk members, Katie has expanded her creative work into public murals, and her work can be seen across the North Berkshires.

Katie says, “Common Folk has helped me to believe in myself, as an artist, and as someone who could have an impact on their community.”

Katherine ("Katie," not "Kathy") is a self-taught visual artist, community organizer, mischief maker, and lover of cats, music, art, and coffee. She was raised in and influenced by the arts of Berkshire County (and Bennington).

Even before he moved to North Adams in August 2022, Conall Mannion () knew he wanted to become a member of Common Folk. Many of the friends that encouraged him to relocate to the area were also members and he knew Common Folk would provide him with a network of friends, resources and community in his new home. Since joining Common Folk he’s connected with neighbors and mentors. He loves having access to shared materials and a space to work with the support of the town. A musician and visual artist, he also appreciates the opportunity to show his work in the Holden Street storefront and Nook gallery.

Conall Mannion is an Irish-born, multidisciplinary artist who primarily works through a collaborative website (wizardzonlyfools.com) with his partner Stephanie Trotto. Conall's practice includes a variety of mediums, such as clothing, music, poetry and more.

He says, “Together our actions and work have the ability to build our strength as a community, both financially and through personal connection.”

Why is writer and bookmaker a Common Folk member?

“I’m a member of Common Folk to have a physical place to sell my handmade books. Common Folk makes selling art so easy because they handle all the sales tax, accounting, and inventory so that I can focus on making what I love. They let me test out selling without investing in becoming a full business. They even bring a collection of work by members and set up a booth at different art and craft fairs so my work travels to new audiences. I love volunteering at the store because I get to know different community members and talk with visitors coming through. It helps me connect to my community.”

Molly moved to North Adams in 2019 from the Midwest for a job at MASS MoCA. Her handmade blank journals are available at the Common Folk storefront.

Are you interested in selling your work through our collective? There are multiple ways to join and participate. Click “Become a Common Folk Member” at the link in our bio to learn more!

We couldn't be more grateful to be featured in this Mass Growth Capital Corp. Biz-M-Power video! In 2022, we were able to raise $30k to purchase our home on 12 Holden Street. The Biz-M-Power program matched what we raised, and we were able to get $50k. It showed us that we were able to be invested in to have a sustainable future for so many creators. Invested by the community and for the community.

Watch the video to hear Creative Director and Founder Jessica Sweeney talk more about the campaign that got us to where we are today!
