What a night.

Last night, a packed house came together for our Benefit for Virginia Stage Company, featuring the incredible cast of Come From Away. We are so grateful to everyone who joined us, and to everyone who has donated, reached out, volunteered, shared our story, and supported VSC and the Wells Theatre during these incredibly difficult days.

Your support has meant more than we can say.

And if Saturday was any indication, Hampton Roads is in for something very special.

The cast gave us a thrilling preview of Come From Away, and we cannot wait to welcome audiences back and share this remarkable story of kindness, resilience, and community with you.

Come From Away opens this Saturday, September 5, at the Wells Theatre.

After everything the past week has brought, we can’t think of a more meaningful story to tell right now.

There are heaters and dehumidifiers running throughout the Wells Theatre right now, and there is still a lot of mitigation work ahead of us before rebuilding can truly begin.

We’re continuing to go through equipment and assess the damage, and we know we haven’t discovered the full extent of it yet.

There has been some bad news. The Clavinova, the digital piano we planned to use for Come From Away, was destroyed in the flooding.

But there has been good news, too. After concerns that it may have been damaged, we’re incredibly relieved to share that our fly system, which brings in curtains, scenery, and other elements above the stage, is fully operational.

And even better: work has resumed on the sets for Come From Away.

There is still so much to do. The Wells is filled with equipment drying out the building, our team continues to assess what can be saved and what will need to be replaced, and we haven’t even begun the rebuilding process.

But we are moving forward.

Through all of this, we are incredibly grateful for our staff, cast, and crew who continue to adapt and keep going. And we are grateful for Hampton Roads. The volunteers, donations, messages, calls, and words of encouragement we’ve received have reminded us just how much the Wells Theatre means to this community.

We’re hopeful. We’re determined. And we have a lot of work ahead of us.

Saturday night, the Wells flooded again.

For nearly two hours, water poured into the theatre. And for nearly two hours, our cast and crew of Come From Away, VSC staff, City of Norfolk representatives, firefighters, and others formed a massive bucket brigade and fought to protect the Wells.

Without them, the damage would have been much, much worse.

We are overwhelmed by the people who have shown up for this theatre, both inside the Wells that night and throughout our community in the days since.

But we are facing a serious road ahead, and we still need help.

Saturday night, the Wells Theatre flooded again.

For nearly two hours, water poured into the building, reaching our stage, house, backstage areas, and the spaces beneath the stage.

And once again, people showed up.

The cast and crew of Come From Away, VSC staff, representatives from the City of Norfolk, and Norfolk Fire-Rescue worked side by side to fight the water and protect the theatre and our production.

We are incredibly proud of everyone who jumped in. And we are deeply grateful for the extraordinary outpouring of support we have received from our community over the past several days.

The damage to the Wells is extensive, and we are still assessing what this means for Come From Away. There are many questions we cannot answer yet, but our team is doing everything possible to find a path forward.

This week, the Wells Theatre was hit by a severe flood.

Water poured into the building, reaching the stage, backstage areas, box seats, hallways and other spaces throughout the theatre. Since Thursday, our staff and crews have worked nearly around the clock to mitigate the damage, protect the Wells and begin the difficult work of cleaning up.

Today, more than 30 members of our community showed up to help.

They moved equipment and supplies out of affected areas, carried items up and down stairs, and helped us prepare the building so mitigation and repairs can move forward. We are incredibly grateful to every person who gave their time and energy today.

Unfortunately, this evening brought another setback. Heavy rains in Norfolk caused water to enter the theatre again. Thanks to the tireless efforts of our crew, staff and even members of the Come From Away cast, we were able to respond quickly and weather another incredibly difficult situation.

At this point, Come From Away remains on track to open September 2.

Today was supposed to be our Community Day, a day when we opened the doors of the Wells and welcomed Hampton Roads inside.

Instead, our community showed up to help us keep those doors open.

We cannot adequately express what that means to us.

But the reality is that this unexpected disaster comes with significant unexpected costs: emergency cleanup, mitigation, building repairs, damaged equipment, replacement of ruined scenic elements and expenses we are still uncovering.

Now more than ever, Virginia Stage Company needs the financial support of our community.

Yesterday’s storm caused significant damage to the Wells Theatre.

Water poured through the ceiling and onto our stage. Ceiling tiles collapsed. And through it all, our incredible crew worked tirelessly to protect the theatre, contain the water and begin the difficult work of cleaning up.

The images in this video are hard for us to watch. The Wells is more than a building. It is our artistic home, a gathering place for our community and a place filled with more than a century of stories and memories.

Today, our team is continuing to assess the damage and determine what comes next.

Performances of Come From Away are moving forward as we continue this work. The safety of our cast, crew, staff and audiences remains our highest priority. If any ticket holders are affected, we will contact them directly with additional information.

We also want to say thank you.

Since yesterday, we have received an extraordinary outpouring of messages, well wishes and offers to help. We are deeply grateful. Right now, we are still assessing the damage and determining exactly what we need. When we know more, we’ll let you know how you can help.

And to our crew: thank you. What you see in this video is only a small part of the work they have done and continue to do to care for this theatre.

**UPDATE FOR SATURDAY, AUGUST 22**

We have some disappointing news to share. Due to the severe rainstorm that moved through Norfolk today, the Wells Theatre experienced water coming into the building and onto the stage.

Our team will need the next few days to clean up and make sure everything is safe and ready for audiences. As a result, we must cancel Saturday’s Curtain Up: Community Day at the Wells and the US Fleet Forces Rock Band concert.

We’re incredibly disappointed that we won’t be able to spend the day with our community as planned. The good news is that **we plan to reschedule the Fleet Forces concert** and will share a new date as soon as we can.

And Come From Away audiences, don’t worry: the show will go on! We’ll have the Wells ready to welcome you when performances begin September 2.

It’s National Aviation Day, and we’re celebrating with a look back at a very special afternoon at the Military Aviation Museum!

The cast of Come From Away recently took a field trip among the museum’s incredible collection of historic aircraft, performing two songs from the show and getting the chance to explore a setting that felt especially meaningful for this story.

But the most memorable moment of the day was one no one could have planned.

By complete coincidence, the nephew of the real-life Hannah O’Rourke was in the audience for our presentation. He had the chance to meet ShaaNi Dent, who plays Hannah in our production**, and spend a few moments talking with her and the rest of the cast.

For ShaaNi and her fellow cast members, it was a moving reminder that the people and stories behind Come From Away are very real, and that their impact continues far beyond the stage.

Thank you to the Military Aviation Museum for welcoming us for an afternoon we won’t soon forget.

The Cast is Here... And Come From Away is officially underway.

Last night, our cast and creative team gathered for their first read-through, kicking off the journey to Gander and the remarkable true story of 7,000 stranded passengers, 38 planes, and one small town that opened its doors to the world.

There’s nothing quite like the first time a company comes together around the table. Next stop: the Wells Theatre.
