Our upcoming April 18th performance of Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, “Resurrection,” with the Northwest Florida Symphony Orchestra represents one of the most ambitious projects the NFSO has undertaken. Bringing this work to life requires a broad and collaborative effort, uniting the full NFSO with The Choral Society of Pensacola, the Northwest Florida Symphony Chorale, and singers from Niceville High School Chorus' Opus One, along with our guest soloists. In total, over 200 musicians will take the stage, reflecting both the scale of Mahler’s vision and the collective commitment of the many artists involved in this performance, creating a sound both intimate and immense, surrounding the audience in a shared experience of uncommon magnitude. Months of preparation and exceptional artistic forces are required to bring it to life. When the final chorus rises from a whisper to a thunderous declaration, the effect is overwhelming — not only heard, but deeply felt.

Mahler’s Second is not merely a symphony; it is an emotional and spiritual journey. It begins in darkness and uncertainty, wrestling with life’s deepest questions, and rises steadily toward a radiant conclusion that proclaims renewal and hope. In its final movement, a full chorus and vocal soloists join the orchestra in a breathtaking affirmation of life after struggle — a moment that has moved audiences for more than a century. Drawing on text adapted from Friedrich Klopstock, Mahler ultimately leads the listener toward a sense of renewal, offering not so much a definitive answer as a deeply felt expression of hope.

Mahler’s “Resurrection” Symphony will be performed on Saturday, April 18 at 7:00 p.m. at the Mattie Kelly Arts Center. Tickets are available at MattieKellyArtsCenter.org or by calling 850-729-6000 (Mon-Thurs 10am-4 pm)
