Happy November! Today I’d like to share a controversial piece I did a couple years ago. When I started displaying this drawing of the Anchor Bar and Chef’s Restaurant side by side, I heard a lot of responses that they weren’t neighbors! Well, I didn’t mean to cause confusion...I just wanted to highlight two of Buffalo’s most iconic restaurants. This depiction shows as they were in their earlier days, especially the Anchor Bar which looks quite different today. I added a couple cars from that period, especially the unique late ‘50s Nash Metropolitan. Enjoy your wings and spaghetti parm 😁😋 @ Buffalo, New York

As we head into fall, I’d like to share an autumn scene of a grouping of trees I had photographed many years ago in Yellowstone NP. We were there in June, but when I applied the coloring, I wanted it to look more like fall. Trees are time consuming with pen & ink and this drawing took upwards of 40 hrs to complete. Last week we spent some time at Letchworth State Park camping and enjoying the changing leaves. It was beautiful but sad as this weekend would have been the Art & Craft show which I have done since the early 90’s. This week I’d like to share a piece I did a couple years back of the Buffalo landmark Parkside Candies. I love the throwback storefront and neon sign that you don’t see much anymore. The store sign had been in bad shape for a number of years before being refurbished in recent years. I have added a couple late ‘50s cars in front to highlight the hay days of this local icon. @ Buffalo, New York

This piece is themed after one of my favorite cities for inspiration...Charleston, SC. The history, atmosphere and visual candy of this city is a must for all to see. We have traveled there for the past 8 years and there is always something new to see and do. Not sure if we will make it back there during the COVID thing, but the great thing about this city it they preserve it very well. I wanted to add a couple elements to this picture and my love of dogs was a no brainer in this scene. It’s a wonderful dog friendly city and you will see all types...and people are pretty good about picking up after them 🙂.

This piece I did over the winter depicting a Jeep in the mountains. I had wanted to do a Jeep for some time as my wife and I are somewhat outdoorsy types. I’m not a huge fan of Jeeps myself...they ride kind of rough and are kind of expensive, but my wife always wanted one. She still hasn’t gotten one, but we have rented one on occasion in our visits to Utah to get a little off-roading in. We never did extreme driving as depicted here, but I’m sure Jeep enthusiasts would appreciate it.

This is one of my new drawings I created over the winter. It combines a couple subjects I enjoy, vintage cars and lighthouses. This is an idea I had on the drawing board for years as the lighthouse was visited over 20 years ago on Cape Cod and the cars were found in Florida while visiting my mom around Gainesville. I have been adding spot color to my drawings the past few years to draw attention to certain areas of the artwork as you see here. On succeeding images you see a closeup of the car detail as well as the line work before adding the color.

Every year for the past couple decades I have created new work over the winter with the intent to sell that work at shows during the spring, summer and fall. It is always exciting to attend those first few shows in anticipation on how people will react to that new art. Obvious those opportunities have diminished greatly during this summer of our discontent. Online just doesn’t have the same feel or spontaneity as in person. At any rate, I will be showing some new work here and what the thought process behind it was. Stay tuned...😊

I hope everyone is well during this difficult time. I wanted to give people a quick update on the shows that have been postponed or cancelled as of 4/24/20:

- Springtime in the Country (Hamburg) is still planned for some time in the summer.
- Lilac Art Festival (Rochester) cancelled.
- Harrisburg Art Fest (PA) cancelled.
- Fairport Canal Days (Fairport) cancelled.
- Allentown Art Fest (Buffalo) cancelled.
- Park Avenue Fest (Rochester) cancelled.

So far, all other shows are waiting to see where we are in the summer. I will keep my show schedule updated on my website www.mikesmithgraphics.com so please check back for when we hopefully get back to a semblance of normal. Stay safe...
