Fossilized oil paint palettes are a different kind of battle entirely.
I started by mechanically scraping off the thick, hardened paint with a putty knife—just working layer by layer to break up the oldest buildup without damaging the surface underneath. Once I got as much dry pigment off as I could, I laid paper towels soaked in mineral spirits over the palettes and let them sit overnight so the solvent could soften what was left embedded in the surface.
The next day I went back in with the putty knife again and scraped away the loosened paint, which came up much more easily after the soak. After that, I moved everything to the sink and let them soak in hot water with dish soap and pink soap, giving everything time to break down the remaining oily residue.
Then I scrubbed everything with a toothbrush to get into all the stubborn crevices and textured areas where paint likes to cling the most. Once I couldn’t lift anything else, I gave them a final rinse, checked for any missed spots, and dried everything thoroughly with paper towels.
It’s messy, slow work—but there’s something satisfying about bringing a palette back from that level of buildup.

Hand-pulled textures, rough edges, and layered faces were all left intentionally raw to preserve the emotion of the carving process itself.

A behind-the-scenes look at the printing stage of my linocut process.
Each print is individually inked and hand-pulled, with careful attention paid to ink consistency, pressure, alignment, and paper handling throughout the printing process. Traditional relief printing is highly hands-on, and subtle variations between prints are part of what gives handmade printmaking its distinctive character.

Linocut printing is one of those art forms that looks simple until you realize every single line is hand carved in reverse, one cut at a time 😅

Between sketching the design, transferring it, carving the block, test prints, fixing mistakes, inking, hand-printing, drying time, cleanup, and the physical wear on my poor wrists… each custom piece ends up being hours of very hands-on work.

That’s part of why I love it though, every print is genuinely handmade and carries all those little human details you can’t get from digital reproduction.

Now excuse me while I go regain feeling in my hands...
