Some plants are merely ingredients. Others arrive as presences.

I had heard of Dittany of Crete, but until now, I had never personally worked with it.

Dittany of Crete (Origanum dictamnus) is a mountainous relative of oregano found naturally only on the island of Crete. In the Cretan dialect, it is called erontas: “love.” The name recalls the daring harvesters who once climbed dangerous mountainsides and rocky gorges to gather it, becoming known as seekers of love.

Its connection to love also appears in classical tradition. In Virgil’s Aeneid, Venus, Aphrodite to the Greeks, gathers Cretan dittany to heal her wounded son. Centuries later, occult writers began describing its unusually dense smoke as a medium through which spirits might manifest or communicate.

That is closer to my own interest in it.

My practice is Hellenic-influenced to some degree, but distinctly underworldly in its approach. I am interested in the dead, the spirits of place, and whatever other persons or intelligences may exist beyond the boundaries we ordinarily perceive.

The dittany used here was imported from Greece through a reputable seller who sources it from cultivation rather than taking it from vulnerable wild populations. The plant is endemic to Crete and protected under European conservation law, so anyone wishing to purchase it should exercise due diligence. Look for sustainably cultivated material, and be cautious of anything proudly advertised as “wild harvested.”

Within twenty minutes of recording this video, the smoke interacted with me in a way I still cannot adequately describe.

I had no previous personal experience with Dittany of Crete and no particular expectation beyond offering a gift to the hedge behind me - visible through the mirror - and to the tree that stands guard over it.

Because I was in a hurry, I did not allow the charcoal to ash over as completely as I should have. Even so, the accounts of the extraordinary amount of smoke this herb produces are unquestionably true. In an enclosed space illuminated only by candlelight, I could easily understand why it became associated with manifestation, scrying, and spirit communication. The smoke does not merely rise. It gathers, moves, and creates a place in which something might become visible.

Regardless of whether one approaches it through spirit work, folk magic, classical tradition, or simply the art of incense, its associations with love and divine healing make Dittany of Crete a beautiful addition to the materia of any practitioner.

I have also decided that I will not bind Papa Shade to a strict “every Wednesday” schedule.

Magic is not a weekly occurrence. It is an everyday relationship.

Some subjects will take time to research and present with the care they deserve, but please feel welcome to follow the page, comment, ask questions, and interact. I generally respond quickly, and I would like this to become a place for genuine conversation rather than content delivered according to an arbitrary calendar.

Warmest regards—and whatever nefariousness you get into, make certain your pacts with spirits are sealed and signed, not merely spoken into an agreement filled with loose ends.

That warning arrived while I was writing this.

It feels as though someone who will eventually read these words needed to hear exactly that.

Both cleansing and feeding the spirit of these keys, the beginning of a very extensive process. Fire is a door this iron is accustomed to, it was used to forge them. Many believe iron to be offensive to the Fae or the otherworld in general, but iron is quite literally everywhere around you. If you take a magnet it run it across the ground, small black flecks will be attracted to it. Those small little black or reddish pieces of dirt are actually small pieces of iron, more than likely the debris of a meteor ride as it burned up in our atmosphere. Iron is believed to compose roughly 80% of our Earth’s molten core, and therefore iron is deeply cthonic and does not frighten the fae, it can in fact attract them. Iron that has been forged, like these keys, carries an inner flame, just like the earth. This first ritual cleansing and feeding welcomes the original spirit or the iron ore to step back through the door that scorched it first.

Sometimes the doors that scare and hurt us are thresholds to new lives one could only dream of. Dream of a door, take a key in hand, and unlock the mysteries, not by naming and categorizing them, but by embracing them.

Put down your books, your phone, and your distractions and seek spirit directly. The doors await those who are not afraid to claim the keys.

Cleansing a new batch of keys to be interred in liminal spaces over the course of the next few months and dedicated to those liminal spaces on Samhain. After which point I will resurrect them with prayer and song, sacred smoke and ash, and consecrate them to be keys of mastery. I will wrap each, give each unique features and a name. They will open and close the way to many a witching.

Enjoy my phone’s collaborative efforts to share with you all (hopefully this will reach more animistic minded people, more witches, or whatever your particular tradition calls you). Many of the snap shots are from things I will be discussing in depth in upcoming videos (depending on how long reels are limited to) or posts on the page. Please feel free to follow, to comment, and engage. I am not seeking monetizing this platform, and should it ever reach that, anything garnered will be directed towards an environmental protection and conservation agency. Please enjoy the snap shots of effigies, my🩸mead made monthly by the moon for offerings to appropriate spirits, of some workings that I will explain in depth, poppet magic, sigil magic, practical magic, and the real animistic central core - not only contact with spirits, but relationships with them.
